and yes Bruce, i felt like that too, tonight!
Bruce, a night off won't do you any harm. I, however, am in the middle of a two week hiatus from running in a bid to get this Piriformis issue under control. It's murder not being able to run. I feel as if all my efforts from the last few months have gone for a Burton. However if I don't rest I've got NO chance of making the Marathon so here's hoping.
In the meantime I've joined a gym to improve my core fitness and am swimming to maintain my stamina.
BTW anyone watch Horizon last night? Interesting wasn't it?
can you summarize?
Basically sitting down too long will kill you. If you do 3 x 20 bursts of (hard) effort on, say, an exercise bike, 3 times a week you will be as fit as if you go to the gym for an hour a day.
Also a lot of your ability to break down fats and sugars and to improve your stamina is down to genetics. Some people can look through a gym window and develop a six pack. Others can run for days and never improve beyond a certain limit.
It's worth catching on BBC iplayer.

I used to look through a gym window - I didn't get a six-pack - I got a restraining order...Gary the Enfield wrote:Some people can look through a gym window and develop a six pack.

That first bit surely most people have known for ages?!
I reckon genetics does play a huge part in your ability and whether you pile on the pounds. My diet is crap yet I was always skinny as a rake til I had the twins, and genetics wise - look at all the amazing endurance athletes Kenya and Ethopia produce. I'm sure they are born with a higher proportion of slow twitch muscle fibres then the average person.

Didn't see Horizon, but I watched something about The goliath tigerfish. Imagine that there's one of those down your local pool and you'll take yonks off of your times

Oh, and if I breathe in whilst walking past Gregg's, I gain three kilos

Re: The athletics/running thread
Can't compete with Bruce Ovett but today I ran 5k for the first time since starting this programme.
Came in at 28min 49 secs which I am chuffed with.
Come a along way in 2 months when I did little exercise and smoked 30 tabs a day.

I'll chase you anytime.Gooner Girl wrote:

I was surprised at the time but today I really concentrated on trying to keep a rhythm going. I think I lengthened my stride a bit which may have improved my speed. Not sure really.
There's no way I could have done another 2.5k though.
