Aye, without the lemonade. I'm a big believer in extracting energy out of ale. It's pure'n'tasty energy, almost as isotonically balanced as these fancy modern sports drinks that taste like PCBs & camel piss.Gary the Enfield wrote:The Axman wrote:Wahay. Discovered a new inaugural Class A fell race happening in April. 8 km with 320m of ascent. Very very local to my house.
Chance for a First place. Gonna keep it under my hat.
Good luck with that you loon. Do you drink shandy afterwards?I did a 6 miler today to test my injury and there has been no discernible reaction. I now have six weeks 'til the marathon. I won't do the time I wanted but I can hopefully complete the course.
Good luck with the 'rathon (presume we're talking London). What time are you hoping for? or doesn't it matter?

Re: The athletics/running thread
All you runners have my admiration. Was behind schedule for the game the other day, so ran/jogged/walked down the road to the pub (3 miles). I'm not good at running at all, and I don't like the impact on the knees, so anyone with knees who can run must be superhuman in my book. Do you run just on the balls of your feet, or do you land on the heel and roll?
Walking? Now walking is different, love it!
Any other gym-goers or are you all tarmac pounders?

Regressed
It's my own fault as I've not been out in over a week (well, I have, but there was no running involved). Still, I was happy to do 2.5K in 15 mins the other week. 5K on Weds, 7.5 on Friday - Has to be done!

May the bridges I burn light your way
Re: The athletics/running thread
I think most people here are outdoorsy runners. I think GG does some gym work. Personally I only run off piste these days - fell running. Running on tarmac is quite hard when you're used to running on tracks/paths/grass but there are usually some tarmac/stone slabbed sections on most races.Armchair Wanderer wrote:All you runners have my admiration. I think your moniker may explain why your knees suffer when running; most armchair denizens tend to be ever so slightly overweight, and each extra teensy-weensy gram over what you would be carrying if you were instead called HunterGathererWarrior tends to punish the knees when in motion.

Nah, i don't do gym work, Bruice has started going to the gym though. I just play football and run occasionally - and in the summer sometimes compete at track and field. The Axman wrote:I think most people here are outdoorsy runners. I think GG does some gym work. Had, which must've helped with the running, though I'm finding it hard to balance the two and get some rest in between. I certainly much prefer the running, so haven't been to the gym in a few weeks. 90 mins of 5-a-side on a Sunday morning can leave me unable to do either (in any meaningful way) for a couple of days though.Gooner Girl wrote:Nah, i don't do gym work, Bruice has started going to the gym though. Oooh, well the pyramid is something like exercise, food and rest. All three are as important as each other in my book. I've been trying to do 7.5 mile weighted walks, then a day off, then resistance session, day off, then walk... If I did the walk unweighted probably wouldn't need as many rests as I don't tend to do any leg work. Did a gym session last night, was fairly tired because it was quite late and I'd been doing stuff all day but forced myself through it and it was a decent session in the end.
The Axman is very harsh indeed

I go shopping to the out of town place the other side of town, carry recycling there which isn't very heavy, then load up with cans, non-milk milk and bottles on the way back. Walking is obviously gentle cardio but walking with a really [very] heavy rucksack seems like it's kinda resistance-y. It's a nice workout, albeit I'm a bit odd for doing it.thebish wrote:rucksack full of potatoes? or strap-on leg/arm weights?Armchair Wanderer wrote: I've been trying to do 7.5 mile weighted walks, then a day off,

apparently.... adding weight will allow you to burn more calories per mile, but only about 5-8 calories more per mile for every 10 pounds added... a man weighing 200lb would burn about 30calories for an extra 1/4mile walked at easy pace without weights...
the beauty of your system, though, is that it fits into your life - you do have to do the shopping anyway - so it is not an EXTRA - so is summat you are more likely to keep up with...
I once had an occupational healthcheck - and the bloke running the physical side of it asked my normal daily exercise pattern - it was basically walking the dog...
he told me I should focus on that - walk quicker and swing my arms... but.. the dog thought I'd gone mental (and passers by gave me a wide berth!), and the dog kept leaping up at me - so I soon jacked that in!!
I did try running with the dog a few years ago - but he kept buggering off to chase the horses or get lost in the bushes and i had to stop to go and round him up... if I kept him on the lead - he'd constantly trip me up..

Actually, I never ever do any warm up exercises or training exercises, because like you I do all that by walking. I walk miles and miles in a week, an absolute minimum of 2 hours/ 8 miles a day, every day. And like theBish did, I do it with the dog.
I've got a friend, pub landlady, who struggles constantly to find the right exercise regime - she finds walking does nothing to keep her weight down, and running knackers her body. She's constantly amazed (and annoyed) that I can just walk and drink beer whenever and eat whatever I want and it makes no difference to me. Different constitutions, different metabolisms I suppose.
