[
quote="TANGODANCER"]So, to sum up the QPR game ( or at least as the media see it) :

It was a tragedy they lost and didn't get the three points (even if the "no goal" had been allowed they wouldn't have done that), it's okay for them to get corners that weren't, and score from offside positions, the officials were useless, they should have had two penalties and Mark Hughes and his team of terrific (and highly expensive) players were robbed. About Bolton, a few words from Bogdan which they see as confirming it all. About Bolton as a team who scored two goals and beat them, scarcely a word. Popular, ain't we just.
[/quote]
It's amazing (not) how among all the comments about the officials screwing up, no one -commentators, pundits, even our own manager and players - has pointed out two other things the officials failed to spot 1) that Zamora illegally impeded Bogdan as the cross came over and 2) that the ball went out of play off Cisse not a defender (ie that the "goal" that never was was scored from a "corner" that never should have been!)

On another point, Shearer was quite within his rights - duties, even - to analyse Zat Knight. Coyle is quite within his rights – duties, even – to call out underperforming players if he sees fit. Whether he's right or not is another question, but considering Coyle is so often derided for being Everybody's Best Mate it seems a little two-faced to have a go at him for slating underachievers.

and he clearly agreed by (re-)dropping Knight, who has been out of favour ever since his comments suggesting some players weren't playing well enough!

So long as he's consistent and 'calls out' all the underachievers, not just Bogdan, Wheater and Muamba

Yep, fair enough. Although being fair isn't always the way forward: Clough constantly derided Martin O'Neill while praising John Robertson - although that was more behind the scenes than in public. Maybe it's hard to apportion blame equally: sometimes circumstance dictates a dressing-down, while other timings might not work ("I was delighted with the win, although I did notice Pratley played like a statue of shite".)

And Coyle criticising Shearer for doing so? Hypocritical at best.

or maybe what Coyle thinks Knight needs at this particular time - some sign of support from his manager. maybe at other times Knight NEEDS a kick up the arse and a public dressing down.

I know you like to jump on any opportunity to slag Coyle that you can find - but you're sounding just a little bit desperate to make this one stick...

Coyle said that its not appropriate for Shearer a pundit to single out a player. Now clearly thats what pundits have done for years.

Its ridiculous to suggest that, but even worse when you've been doing it yourself about your own players.

But hey, you can see that you just want an argument.

it's not hypocritical - though - as you have suggested - because they are both doing very different things... (as I pointed out)

You're right its actually worse than hypocritical because IF anyone has a duty to protect players then its the manager himself. If he hasn't seen the need to do that, several times with serveral different players this season, then WHY can he expect Alan fecking Shearer to?

but Coyle doesn't expect Shearer not to criticise Knight - he is SAYING it in order to do what he thinks knight needs at the moment - some support from his manager - that's all. Coyle is simply USING shearer to publicly back his player.

you're really not following this are you?

I agree with you bish with what knight needs at the moment seeing he is still under contract and Coyle carn't sell him off to anyone although it would have been clearer if Shearer had said perhaps sanding the bench would suit him better!

Highlighting a players' error(s) is a bit different to ridiculing a players ability

We are. Has Coyle ever come out and talked of how crap Knight is? I've never heard him do so. Just highlighting errors, which most managers do when they're under pressure.

Shearer on the other hand, wiped the floor with Knight didn't he?

What he actually says....
"The other disappointing thing is for Alan Shearer to go and pick out one of our individual players - Zat Knight - which I thought was in really poor taste.

"Alan will know, because he had a tough job when he was at Newcastle [when the Magpies were relegated under his stewardship], how important it is to stick together as a group.

"The lads are in the studio to give their opinion, but I think it's in poor taste to single out Zat
He's not defending Knight. He's criticising Shearer for "poor taste". He's not even defending Knight saying the criticism was unjustified. All he's actually said is that Shearer was wrong to single a player out. There is no actual support for the player there. And you're opinion of why he's saying it, is just an opinion. Coyle has singled out his own players for criticism. I don't think he can claim someone who is completely unrelated to our club, doing so is "poor taste".

yeah - it is an opinion - I thought this forum was about sharing opinions. you shared yours - that Coyle is a hypocrite - I shared mine, that he's not...

the day when the only posts allowed on here must be tagged FACT will be a sad day...

Coyle (given his own comments in the past and given he keeps dropping him) can't come on and say Knight is an awesome player pushing for England selection - so he does the next best thing - and slagging Shearer will be seen by Knight as some kind of defense/support. It's really not that difficult.
