Re: Owen Coyle and Phil Gartside
This week wasn't just about being a decent person, it's been about showing human qualities, and real leadership skills.bobo the clown wrote:Throughout any criticism of his managerial decisions ... not least not using Moo properly .... no-one has questioned the guy being a nice human being. He patently is. He's proven it this week, if it ever needed proving.
Probably not the right place for this, but he's shown me he has leadership skills and human qualities that stand out. Perhaps he just needs someone with a little more football 'know-how and savvy' to assist him along the way.

Would agree with that. But I'd still be looking at summer.bobo the clown wrote:Throughout any criticism of his managerial decisions ... not least not using Moo properly .... no-one has questioned the guy being a nice human being. He patently is. He's proven it this week, if it ever needed proving.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I still hope, but don't expect, that during the summer, OC hires an experienced sidekick. Trouble is, it would mean hoofing out Sandy Stewart – more likely than chief coach Steve Davis. I don't know what Stewart is like but I know Coyle needs to be consulting a wise man, not a yes-man.
None of this takes away from the excellent way Coyle has handled this crisis.

You mean if we go down? Would not change one bit what I thought of his footballing nonce I would still want his head. I know I'm not the only one who's getting a bit tired of this almost grief like mourning thats runing through the club and someone said others have had folk actually die in work but carried on all power to Fabrice but there is still a business to run nice guy or not!bobo the clown wrote:I think you can forget that, Worthy. Agree with this now. I've been his biggest critic, but he's stood up so well in the past few days under extremely difficult circumstances that I feel its only fair he is given a longer run, irrespective of what happens this season. I agree though that its imperative he brings in an experienced assistant who is prepared to guide him and help him, and as you say not just nod along. End of the season that needs to happen IMO.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:I still hope, but don't expect, that during the summer, OC hires an experienced sidekick. Theres always a a chance Coyle says 'enoughs enough'
He's under tremendous pressure to start with and the last few days won't have made it any easier

It was posited that nobody's ever questioned the fact that he's a thoroughly nice bloke.BWFC_Insane wrote:Thats not really in the spirit of the thread is it?Bruce Rioja wrote:Ah right. So he's not carcinogenic now, is he not?
With respect, your cancer post is the most memorable example of that not being the case.
Anyway, I've just read that piece by Henry Winter again. Some bizarre, syrupy stuff in there - is he friends with Coyle?

Blatantly not true. Someone can be harmful to a club or an organisation, but still be a decent bloke. Frankly being a decent human being doesn't matter that much as a football manager. It does matter in situations like we've just had. But the past few days he's shown exemplary leadership skills, which I guess he's not had chance to before. If someone just helps him along tactically he might be ok....mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:It was posited that nobody's ever questioned the fact that he's a thoroughly nice bloke.BWFC_Insane wrote:Thats not really in the spirit of the thread is it?Bruce Rioja wrote:Ah right. I see. Perhaps you could point out where the 'spirit' of the thread was such that your original claim was in anyway justifiable then?BWFC_Insane wrote:Thats not really in the spirit of the thread is it?Bruce Rioja wrote:Ah right. So he's not carcinogenic now, is he not?

Ok, in that case I apologise. I thought your point was that he was stubborn, falls out with people and has his favourites - the sorts of thing Muamba himself has been hinting at recently.BWFC_Insane wrote:Blatantly not true. I agree that he has handled the last few days well and has spoken well whenever called upon. But I'm not sure I understand this quickly established wisdom about inspirational leadership, unless I've missed something. What choice has he had? From what I have seen he has more or less said the sorts of things I'd expect anyone to say.

I would imagine Owen and Sandy have been friends since they played together at Airdrieonians under Alex MacDonald at the start of the nineties.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:I still hope, but don't expect, that during the summer, OC hires an experienced sidekick. They also later teamed up at Airdrie Utd where Coyle was player/assistant and Stewart the manager. Coyle left to manage St Johnstone and was later joined by Stewart who was (I would say unfairly) sacked by Airdrie. So in essence I can't see Coyle getting rid of Stewart, perhaps however a different role for him could be found. You will also struggle to find two nicer people in football than Sandy Stewart and Owen Coyle, the way the latter has handled himself in these past few days has been of no surprise to me.

Plenty is said in the frustration of a defeat. Justifiable is a strange word to use. Lots of bad things been said on here by many about perfectly nice people. I believe you've said a few things about Sammy Lee (who is throughly nice and amiable btw). Its what happens when people discuss football passionately.Bruce Rioja wrote:I see. I think he looks rather dashing in a suit, if that helps?
Hope he starts wearing it on the sidelines.
My mum thinks he looks a bit scruffy in his shorts.
What a hero, What a man...... Ooooh, what a bad foul...

This is me in a nutshell. Although, if OC takes us down and is resistant to help what should we do then? Contract extension would be rewarding failure.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:I still hope, but don't expect, that during the summer, OC hires an experienced sidekick.
