Just to emphasise how lucky Muamba has been to have such support on hand, here is a sad but oh so similar story from India on the Guardian website...

An Indian footballer died after collapsing on the pitch during a district-level league match, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced.

Local media reported the 27-year-old Bangalore Mars striker D Venkatesh collapsed following a cardiac arrest at the Bangalore Football Stadium. With no ambulance available, his team-mates hired a tuk-tuk (an auto-rickshaw) to take him to a local hospital where Venkatesh was declared dead, one report said.

"Venkatesh came on as a substitute in the second half for his club against South Western Railway in a Bangalore District Football Association 'A' Division match and collapsed," the AIFF said on its website."

Federation officials were not available for further details.

His death coincides with the English Premier League's decision to review its medical procedures after the Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest while playing against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Muamba is recovering in hospital.

It was in the south Indian city, also known as Bengaluru, that the top Indian club Dempo's Brazilian striker Cristiano Junior died after colliding with the Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul in the final of the 2004 Federation Cup.

Thoughts and best wishes to his family. It is a shame the same facilities weren't available over there.

I just didn't think it possible that 80 minutes of CPR can keep your organs going. 15 failed defib attempts by the time he got to hospital... but then it was still another half hour before they got him going again so presumably it could've been any number more?

Couldn't believe it either. I didn't even realise that was physically possible. Perhaps when you're:

a) Lucky enough to have exemplary professionals on hand
b) Half an hour away from a specialist hospital
c) Dealing with an elite athlete

...you must stand a fraction of a chance. As for the power of the collective prayers, I've not got a strong opinion either way. I'll leave that for Dan Brown novels

well well well.

of course there is a way for fab to go yet but who can help but be delighted with his progress? it hit me and i'm sure every football fan as if he was one of our own players. will never forget that evening and how it made me feel.

i feared the worse but my god he's come through, seriously i could kiss the fella. wish him the absolute best going forward, what a great man and a breath of fresh air in the world of modern football with all the big time charlies and mercenaries. don't want to predict his future but i'll keep an eye out for him in whatever he does.

also what a credit owen coyle is, you'd want him in the trenches next to you with that spirit.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry traveled thousands of miles to be at Fabrice Muamba's bedside as the Bolton Wanderers midfielder continues to recover from cardiac arrest.

Henry traveled over 3,500 miles from New York to spend time with his former Gunners teammate and his family at the London Chest Hospital.

The New York Red Bulls forward also revealed that Muamba is able to "talk perfectly" as he continues to recover after collapsing against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

The Frenchman announced on his Twitter feed: "Leaving back to America - Fabrice is getting a lot better which is fantastic. I will let you know more when I'm back in the US.

"Fabrice is in a stable condition and can talk perfectly."

One of Muamba's doctors had earlier revealed that the former England under-21 international had stopped breathing for 78 minutes before finally being revived in hospital.

The Frenchman flew to London after New York Red Bulls' game against Real Salt Lake to spend an hour with his former Arsenal teammate after the Bolton midfielder's cardiac arrest.

Glad things are starting to look more positive for Fabrice , we all wish him the very best for his ongoing re-habilitation and know that he will probably need the most support in the months that follow when he is not so much in the spotlight. I hope there is a big charity match or something for the heart foundation , perhaps at the end of the season Keep fighting Fabrice and all those young people struck down early and unexpectedly.

I am very excited with moo's recovery and even more so after reading that at one point he was technically not with us. I believe moo's time is not up yet - he still has business to deal with right here.

At the same token, condolences to the young man and the indian player had left us and wish that they are at a better place.
