Top stuff Gary. Just completing a marathon is a massive achievement. Well done.

Just been reading about the girl that passed away near Buckingham Palace - she was only 30.
Desperately sad news

Yes it is. The amount of people after mile 17 who were being attended to by St. John's Ambulance was scary. A reminder that this marathon thing can't be taken lightly.

Indeed - which is the point i have been trying to get across to half my football team on fb this lunchtime who are trying to get me to do the Brighton marathon next year. I'm almost tempted, but a bit too scared i wouldn't finsh it... Not neccesarily cos i'd die (which isn't a pleasant thought) but the fear of failure is quite real!Gary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Just been reading about the girl that passed away near Buckingham Palace - she was only 30.

If you get the foundation right you'll finish. What time you do depends on the day. Believe me.

I don't think I'd care much about a time so long as I wasn't last, I'd be thrilled just to fknish, don't really believe, even with training I could do that. My furthest ever race has been 4 miles and my furthest ever training run ten. That's not even near half a marathon distance... Apparently according to the footy girls if be fine as I 'run like a fiend' in training but that's mostly short sprints, hardly the same!

After doing a 12 mile walk with the indefatigable hound, it's back to the gym for the first time in quite a while tonight for me

I'm going to start interval training in the next couple of weeks, once the season ends. This means sprinting up hills, jogging down them and sprinting back up them until you're sick.
Coupled with the bike, press-ups and weights....
I can't wait....

Re: The athletics/running thread
Sounds good Boris
Managed 7 miles this afternoon which after a weekend of heavy boozing and recent injury went surprisingly well. Yesterday didn't seem to be a good day for PBs. Of the half a dozen people I knew who were doing it, none improved on their times. I see the BBC newreader Sophie Raworth, collapsed at 24 miles, woke up 2 hours later in a st Johns tent, then went out and finished the last 2 miles
Gary - how was it running with so many other folk? Does it slow you down with some getting in the way? Was the support as big a boost as they say it is?

HG I think Sophie Raworth's collapse was last year. The support around the course is unremitting ( to the point of tedium ) but nothing beats seeing a familiar face or group in the crowd. My first mile was 9:48 because of the congestion at the start but it thins out after 3 miles

Yes, was thinking similar, need to get myself moving again though first.
When you thinking, Caps?

Came down Stich to South Drive, cross to HFW, down to the bottom, around Ashdene and back up the way I went down, thus finishing up StichBruce Rioja wrote:There was a lad running up HFW before, like I run down it, the basstid!CAPSLOCK wrote:

Just had my first post chest infection go. It was like starting an old car
3K in a terrible time of 19:43, but I'm just happy to get going again. Will step it up on Thursday

It's hard getting back into it Bruce, I did a hilly couple of miles this ebbing and am knackered now yet I know if I did that run 3 times a week for next few weeks it would seem like nothing...Bruce Rioja wrote:Just had my first post chest infection go. It was like starting an old car![]()

Many thanks for the encouragement, GG. It does feel like I've lost my gains just now - but I'm sure I'll be back to where I was in a week or two. I'll stick at it
