Its interesting that you cite clubs like Newcastle and Everton as "having the tools" when essentially Newcastle are being run on a "buy low sell high spend nowt" basis and Everton have down the years consistently spent very little, to the extent that in the not too distant past Moyes compared his budget unfavourably to ours.

I was basing it more on fan base, regular high % of ground capacity and brand recognition outside UK..
TBH Newcastle have only run that strategy in the Mike Ashley period and Andy Carol aside I don't remember that many hot housed high profit Geordies splashing onto the transfer profit market..

my point was on the basis of the points above both have the capability to reach the 'established' high ground, notwithstanding that Everton should have gone down when we did in the 90's and Newcastle are just back from a successful rest in the Championship.. you could equally add Villa and possibly a Wolves or a Stoke... That would probably be a stretch..

in any event I don't think we have ever been any better than 'enjoying it whilst it lasts' and 60% of the league are in the same spot.. as I once said the established tag has equally been applied in the past to Charlton, Coventry, Southampton, and on and on through all 3 lower divisions..

When did Moyes do that? It feels like they have regularly spent £3million - £7million on players over the past half dozen seasons.

They've occasionally spent big - £15m on Fellaini, £9m on Bilyaletdinov - but went three years without paying a fee before this January (largely funded by the deadline-day £15m received for Arteta, Beckford and Yakubu).

Not sure that's quite right but I take the point.

Aren't Liverpool an established Prem side too? It's not that long since City were in Div One and I do recall Spurs being 19th or 20th the day 'Arry took over. Mind you, I do seem to also recall being at WHL that day and seeing them beating some northern team......

good point well made...
All I was saying [is give us a goal?] is in any given year there or 5-6 'established teams, everyone else is to a greater or lesser extent on borrowed time.... and as time passes in the skyhype sports premier league the chances of breaking in to that comfort zone diminish with every passing pound...

Further to my previous post, I would like to qualify some of my thoughts in a clearer fashion.

In answer to the question 'Do I think Coyle is any good?' I think the verdict is inconclusive with his time at Wanderers, He has a win percentage of 34% with a further 18% drawn. To put that into context Megson had 27% win, Allardyce 41%. So he is right in the middle of both of them and I think with a little more luck and patience next year he will be nearer Allardyce than Megson!

This season he has been hampered with the loss of 4 quality players for significant periods of the season ( CYL, Holden, Cahill and Muamba ) who would be close to first names on the team sheet when fit with a full squad to select from. In addition to the loss of Tyrone Mears for the majority of the season although maybe more of a squad player. That will hopefully give us effectively 3 new players for the start of next season.

The clubs finances are in a dreadful state owing 93m which represents 150% of turnover, here follows a list of clubs who owe more money than us together with turnover percentage! Chelsea 344%, Newcastle 288%, Man Utd 205%, Fulham 246%, Villa 120%, Liverpool 66% and Arsenal 35% . Whilst these figures in themselves mean nothing as the only premiership club carrying no debt currently is Wolverhampton Wanderers and look at their performance this year. It does show how prudent our financial caution in the transfer market is when faced with a relegation battle and I have no doubt that this years signings will perform for us next year.

I believe a combination of our finances and injury problems mean our likely league position was always going to be a relegation battle, the days of fighting for European qualification are behind us and will take several years to get back to that level. So I would stick with Coyle whatever the outcome of this season and give us the period stability which will allow us to begin the climb back to a mid table premiership team we should be.

Moyes was talking absolute shite if he said that!

Fellaini £15M, Bilyaletdinov £9M, Johnson £8M, Yakubu £12M, Heitinga £6M, Distin £5.5M, Baines £6M, Jelavic £7M. All 5M players just off the top of my head. We've only ever bought two for more than £5M, and one was Nicolas fecking Anelka!

He has bought good players, but he spent money too.

I never get how highly rated he is by people, particularly journalists who should know better. Know someone who played under him at Preston and said all he used to do was get them fired up and tell them to kick the sh*t out of the other team. Didn't want to know about the youth set up there either. Which makes the 'well he got £30M' for Rooney net-spend argument look a load of shite too. He can spot a player, inherited a youth set up with a great reputation and had the savvy to leave it alone and makes the most out of medium priced not expensive but not mega cheap either players. Good manager? Yes. Great? Get to feck.

According to yesterdays Telegraph, in 2009-10 we spent more than Everton. And we're in a much worse position than them.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

There's lies, damn lies...

Wikipedia win percentages include cup games. When you subtract the number of cup games and wins under Coyle (18 and 11 respectively) his win percentage drops to 28.5%. This has been decreasing for the last 14 months. Doing the same thing with Megson gives 83 league games played, 24 wins and a win percentage of 28.9%.

So allowing for half a team in A and E and spectacular ineptitude in every facet of his management Coyle comes out .4% worse after contextulising the stats against him ? I'm sold..

In a league that was a damn sight less competitive under Megson (who also had a budget that quadruples Coyle's)

I'm sure people become blind to this fact when drawing comparisons. I think we'd've been long gone under Megson by now.

Both managers endured difficult circumstances of one kind or another. I don't think its fair to make excuses for one but not the other.

The bottom line being that taking the average over an extended period Coyle has not managed to improve the performances or results from those of his predecessor.

I think you've got to look at what circumstances were of their own creation. Coyle you could argue the tactics and persistence of injuries (not the initial injuries themselves) tactics, while Megson you could argue that he turned the fans and a section of the players against him.
