I understand. I don't think I'm too badly addicted. I'm well aware people say that though. I sometimes go three four, days without having any. Sometimes 15-20 on a night out. I know the challenge is when it isn't three, four days, then another, but three, four, five etc... I'll quit as soon as it comes to kids though. I enjoy it for me, but not passing it on. Unless they choose to.

Technicolour dreams, Prufrock. We were all as young as you once, but at least you should know what Tango and I never did. Stunt your growth they said - I'm 6' 1" so who cared? It's an addiction. If you can kick it now, do it.

Good luck TD.

45 days without for DLH... first few days were hard, especially habit cigs like after a meeting, but once I broke those its been pretty easy.

Using my elec-gig, yesterday and today I've smoked six proper cigs per day (four today so far, and allowing two more before bedtime). I normally smoke in excess of twenty per day so I'm happy enough. :)

Good stuff TD. People wanting to stop smoking is a common thing to see, and obviously a really good decision to make. Problem I find is that they want advice on what can make it easier for them, and not having gone through it myself I don't feel as though I'm in a position to give it. Guess different people respond to different things. In the end I tend to plump for very standard suggestions and things I've heard anecdotally. Interesting to see how you get along and what helps!

The thing is though, Jimbo, even if you had then you still wouldn't be able to answer beyond "This is what worked for me".

Yeah, but at least you can say it with a bit of authority and know a bit about where you're coming from. Most of the stuff you deal with every day you haven't been through, but it's probably smoking cessation that I feel least informed about.

Well, you must have had an itch that you needed scratch, or a scab that you couldn't help picking? For me, nicotine patches and so on would've been like me getting someone else to scratch my itch. The only way for me to do it was absolute cold turkey. But that's just me - I'm either doing something or I'm not.

What Bruce said. I was a 20-40 a day man from about 18 years old until I quit at 38. I smoked my last cigarette on the night of my wife's 41st birthday party and said out loud ''this is the last cigarette I will ever smoke''

I stopped and when I woke up in the morning I was a non-smoker. Not an ex-smoker, a non-smoker.

I also opened a bank account for myself and the money I was spending (about £40 per week at the time) paid for my three trips to see Bolton in the UEFA cup. Portugal, Munich and Madrid.

It now pays for all my running gear, shoes, and race entry fees.

Hobestly, it's the best thing I ever did and when you see the money rolling into your account there's no finer incentive.

Today I'm happy about the call I got at roughly 6.30pm, informing me that I've been offered an assistant editor's job at mergermarket.

Thanks guys :D

Honestly so chuffed. Work has become almost untenable now for various reasons, so to get this...ahhh it's like a fresh start :D

Now then, how does one going about handing in a notice? Never done it before :/ and although this place has been hell I'd rather not burn bridges.

You can do it graciously. Write to thank them sincerely for the experience you've gained there but, regretfully, an opportunity you cannot pass up has arisen.

Or you can dump a trash can or your boss's head, get the sack and two week's severance and leave In some quarters this might count as at least singing bridges
