Chris Thompson - Ex Player

Post by Riviman » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:09 pm

From the BWFC Official site

Bolton Wanderers are saddened to hear of the death of former player Chris Thompson over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Thompson, aged 52, progressed through the club's youth team and went onto make a total of 81 senior appearances for the Trotters between 1977 and 1983.

In total, the Walsall-born midfielder netted 20 goals for the club, a number of which proved pivotal in preserving Wanderers' Division Two status at the time, when playing alongside the likes of Sam Allardyce, Peter Reid, Alan Gowling, Paul Jones and Neil Whatmore.

After a loan spell with Lincoln City 1983, he was eventually sold onto Blackburn Rovers during the following close season.

The club would like to extend its condolences to Chris' close family and friends at this difficult time.

My goodness that's too young. Nice player & one who was a bit better than we were as a club during our darkest days.

RIP

Bloody hell. I used to know Chris well. I worked with his wife during his time at Bolton. I think they got divorced in the late 1980's. She is still living in Westhoughton as far as I am aware. He was a nice guy.

RIP.

Found out about this over the weekend. Really sad. Used to play with his son when we were growing up so knew them pretty well back then. Thoughts go out to them.

Really shocked at this. He was one of the few bright sparks in a dark period for the club. Well remember him & David Hoggan scoring a few goals in 1981-82 to keep us up. R.I.P
