I don't care whether they're from Abidjan or Accrington: the important thing is how good they are and, if they must move on against our wishes, whether they'll make us a profit.

Agree with this too!Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:I don't care whether they're from Abidjan or Accrington: the important thing is how good they are and, if they must move on against our wishes, whether they'll make us a profit.

But wouldn't like to think we were just looking in one place, for second rate cloggers, to fill the squad with, whilst looking for key players through the loan market.

Wasn't Al Habsi playing in Oslo when we signed him? Barring the signings of Braaten and Wilhelmson the Scandinavian market has served us very well over the years. Whereas I agree with DSB in that it doesn't really matter where a player comes from, some markets do bear more fruit than others.

And Ream and Holden came from where??Worthy4England wrote:Agree with this, our sole focus abroad, appears to be in Spain, although this Sanchez fella I think plays in France.
Coyle has signed players from Spain, USA, Germany, Scotland and Burnley and attempted or at least we're told from Portugal and France... and blighty of course... so personally its bollock to say we're not looking around....
As DSB says the biggie has to be the quality of the individuals we sign not there ethnic background or current country of residence....
edit; Oh and Bolivia... remember the Bolivian chappy Gilbert Alvarez.... He would have been perfect for Wiggin....

I remember Allardyce plundering the African markets and then pulling his face when they all naffed off to the ACN

Did chungy not only cost us 2.2 million ? That's an absolute steal, we should be looking aboard for players with the hope they become quality

Agree entirely that the biggie has to be the quality of the individuals. You can keep your personal bollocks, when you look at who we've signed as perms and from where...David Lee's Hair wrote:And Ream and Holden came from where??Worthy4England wrote:Agree with this, our sole focus abroad, appears to be in Spain, although this Sanchez fella I think plays in France.

11 from England, if I concede on Klasnic who was here anyhow. 2 from US, 1 from Spain, France and Scotland (and I'm not convinced we'd have gone for Wylde if he hadn't been released by Rangers)
Holden - US
Robinson - England (already done deal under previous manager)
Blake - England
Petrov - England
Alonso - Spain
Klasnic - France (but already our player on loan)
Eaves - England
Wheater - England
Reo-Coker - England
Pratley - England (well EPL anyhow)
Eagles - England
Mears - England
N'gog - England
Ream - US
Sordell - England
Wylde - Scotland
Loanee's aren't ours and have no resale value, why would I count them?
Re: Jaffka's gossip thread on the ins and outs at the 'Bok
For the sake of completion, while at Burnley....
Martin Paterson - England
Kevin McDonald - Scotland
Christian Kalvenes - Scotland
Diego Penny - Peru
Chris Eagles - England
Steven Thompson - Scotland
Tyrone Mears - England
Steven Fletcher - Scotland
David Edgar - England
Richard Eckersley - England
Brian Easton - Scotland
Andre Amougou - England
Joe McKee - Scotland
Six from England, five from Scotland and one from Peru. It is unusual that in the five years he's spent managing in England, he's signed a total of four players from outside of Britain, plus another who'd been playing for us all season anyway. Surely there must be good players outside of England, Scotland, the US, Spain and Burnley?

Because we're looking in the market which was the original point in question wasn't it? Look at multi cultural wiggin we don't look around like them...Worthy4England wrote:Loanee's aren't ours and have no resale value, why would I count them?
We obvioulsy do... We signed Rodrigo on loan from Benfica, we got Tuncay from Wolfsburg... They're not ours but we looked in the market... Tuncay had an agreed price if we wanted, we tried and failed for Rodrigo...
I don't think its a case of us not looking around... its probably more a case of not having the scouts of the required standard in place... Fairly damning list from us and Burnley really, with the exception of Holden and probably Fletcher there's a lot of below average in there...

Indeed a lot below average in there. The point about loanee's is you can look in a different market, because you're sometimes not ever going to be buying the buggers, so chances are you need to look in a different place for folk we can afford. We wouldn't generally start off looking for permanent transfers with Chelsea, Arsenal, Benfica and Citeh.David Lee's Hair wrote:Because we're looking in the market which was the original point in question wasn't it? Benfica wanted £6m for Rodrigo we offered £4m (allegedly), so the question is would £4m get us the same type of player in a different market - we know certain Clubs/Countries are going to charge a premium...

Yes, yes, I'm sure we wouldn't sign anyone but for the fact that they are going to move clubs for some reason.Worthy4England wrote: (and I'm not convinced we'd have gone for Wylde if he hadn't been released by Rangers)
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.
