The feckin janitor could be given a playing number and be Savis replacement for what we saw of him.

Get another hard bastard centre half now and we're laughing.

Yep, I feel similar to this. There'll be a lot of grim battles next season against sides well used to the long slog of thick and fast games, he will be a useful addition. More needed!

So that's potentially a CB/CM and if Green is off to QPR then a GK.

What further player additions are we short of?

He was good last year with WBA. He didn't even look out of his depth in the Euros and is one of the few Ireland players who can hold their heads up.
I think I only saw him play once for West Brom (and even that is presuming he played at the Reebok, I can't remember) and haven't seen any of Ireland's games at the Euros. West Brom opted not to keep him on though, so he can't have been that good for them. At Rovers though he was the worst central midfielder in a squad filled with terrible central midfielders.

Incidentally, I think he scored at Barnsley the only other time I saw him play last season. I think he's perfectly fine for what we've brought him in to do, but nothing more than that. I think the clubs interested in signing him are a good indication of his level.
Prufrock wrote: I'm perhaps with you on that, but you have to put yourself in one of two positions. Either you are the board, and you trust Coyle- in which case you might say (what I'm arguing I probably would say) Mark Davies isn't worth £5m, take that, and trust the manager to go out and find maybe two players of the required standard not only to get us up but keep us up. Or, you don't trust Coyle, in which case you take the £5m use it to sack him and get in a manager who can take the same squad minus one player and get it up and keep it up.

I just think when you see Gary Cahill out for £7m, and you see LCY in for £2.2, and Holden for nought, you'd be looking at it in terms of our 'model' of buy young sell for more and think £5m on a £1m outlay fits the model and sounds a good deal.
The 'model' though is not worth having when you don't bring in the right players. Assuming we're looking to at least double our money on these players (as we surely will with Davies and Lee, and would've done with Cahill had we sold him earlier), how many of the players I mentioned have a hope of doing that? It's too early to say with Sordell, but with the rest we just paid average money and received average footballers.
I'm with you on Andrews. Solid enough for this year, in fact I think he'll be a good 'un, Champo player Gareth Farrelly stylee, but not good enough if we get back up.

On Mavies, I don't think we'll ever be getting more than £5m, I don't think he is THAT good, although losing him would certainly be a 'loss', and I think if you are backing the manager which the board clearly are, you have to back him to spend that money wisely to improve the squad.

We're talking hypotheticals though, if Owen says don't sell him for that, we'll be worse, don't sell him, if he says he can improve the squad, and not just for this year, then sell him.

It's always feast or famine with full-backs. We had bog all under Sam and had to field dear old Henrik, plus (poorly) converted centre-backs like Bruno and Ben Haim.

I believe Andrews wasn't offered a new contract at West Brom partly because Roy was leaving and didn't want to make assumptions about his successor's choices. One of the West Brom fans at work would have him back straight away, and he's not particularly easy to please (as I know: he's my boss's boss. And for the record, his boss's boss is also a Baggie and also likes Andrews).

It's said that Green's arrival frees up Paddy Kenny to rejoin Colin at Leeds which allows them to give us Andy Lonerghan, with whom we were briefly linked a month or so back.

I note no one has tried to answer the bold part.

The point of going up is to scramble around, desperately, in the hope of getting 40 points, so we can do it all again the next year, whilst doffing our caps respectfully to the big-boys with all the money.

Whoopee-do. How good is that? Football. Nearly as good as a boot stamping on your face forever. But not quite.

Apologies if it's been posted... This is reassuring if true; an actual desire to play for the club ahead of a potentially more financially rewarding place at Celtic (yes, it could also be strategic in that Celtic could be finished depending on the outcome of the Rangers situation)

I think Andrews would be a good addition to the squad, he's more of a complete midfielder than anyone we currently have (that isn't sidelined). From seeing of his performances at the Euro's, he seems to have the work-rate of Muamba, box-to-box style of Holden and Nolan-esque attribute of popping up in goal-scoring positions (a damn sight more than Pratley does, and that's supposed to be his game's strongest point!).

Under Hodgson and Trapattoni his primary job has been to mind the shop rather than charge forward. We could use some of that.

Insert Coyle deprogramming joke.

Which is certainly something we need, the fact we lacked a player in the middle of the park who supported the defence and shored up the centre of midfield on a consistent basis last season was surely a contributory factor towards our relegation.

Though that is his primary function, he has still looked one of the most dangerous players for Ireland on an attacking basis too (with regards to getting into positions, unfortunately his finishing couldn't match that).
Hopefully though, next season, he will be afforded more time to deliver an end product than he has been given at the Euro's, which will hopefully translate into the "goals from midfield" every team needs.

In fact, no we didn't ... well, not till his terrible illness.

We had Muamba, one of the best in the game at that ... just that Uncle Owen didn't like him.
