Disagree with number 2 when it comes to requirements for making a great album. I can think of lots of songs that don't fit the 'mould' of being a single yet are still fantastic songs. Also, a lot of singles that are released on some great albums tend to be the weaker songs, or more suited to radio airplay or TV, rather than because it's their strongest track.

The one key point that makes a great album is number 3.

Agree on number 2.

Great album shouldn't need ANY singles from it necessarily.

Not every group is into the singles market.

I think 3) is important but 4) can be influenced by the mood you're in - plenty of great albums that on any given Monday morning I wouldn't necessarily want to listen to, but at 1900 on a Friday, I might.

I think it's (4) - yes, to an extent it can be influenced by the mood your in, but a really good album will transcend that, and, for me, often invoke a whole period of time (generally punctuated by a relationship associated with a song, eg. Dylan's "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands", or Robyn Hitchcock's "Airscape") and all the memories that invokes. And you can get lost in that.

Either that, or it's about wizards. Wizards are great.

I'm not sure a really good album will transcend moods. Ace of Spades, is rather different to Chilled Ibiza 1. You probably wouldn't want to listen to them one after the other.
