Can't say I'd heard much of Plan B until last Sunday (I don't get out much) but am enjoying this.

This a Wanderers site - plan B's are not allowed.
They're dirty, they're filthy, they're never gonna last.

Re: What are you playing tonight?
Good man. Is there a new album coming out? I'm sure (in my own lovely head) that this convo about tours started because there was going to be a new album, but wikipedia has nothing?
Is that album of covers worth buying do you know, haven't bought any new music in a few weeks and I need things to put in my newly organised folders!

Honestly, Defamation is superb
2 or 3 classic songs, 1 iffy one, all the rest build to a truly excellent album

I haven't listened to Underwater Sunshine - I think I'll see if I can find it on spotify though. In general I have a bit of a problem with cover versions (Madonna's American Pie? Dear oh dear) unless the person covering it is really taking ownership of it and making it their own. I thought that CC did feck all with Big Yellow Taxi and as such I'm not driven towards finding out what they've done with a load of stuff that I've never heard of. It saddened me enormously to hear the most talented group of musicians, and the most prolific singer/songwriter I've ever studied stepping into what is chiefly this Boyzone type carbon copy arena.Prufrock wrote:Good man. If I could give you what is, for me, the most perfect example of what I'm saying a cover version should be, then it's Tori Amos's verion of Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole and The Commotions. LC&TC being your quintessentially British jangly guitar playing bunch of students, as evidenced here;

Which Tori Amos absolutely owns when she turns it into this kind of sorrowful refrain here;

Re: What are you playing tonight?
Anyone see Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds on T in the park last night? I know he might not be everybody's cup of tea (although for me Oasis were far far better than the Stone Roses) but he cant half perform live. Great stuff

Re: What are you playing tonight?
I didn't but I might catch it on replay maybe. Have to say what I've heard of High Flying Birds, I haven't been too impressed with. Oasis certainly pretty good and I wouldn't have to think too long about whether I wanted tickets to them or the Stone Roses if they were both going free.Harry Genshaw wrote:Anyone see Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds on T in the park last night? Re: What are you playing tonight?
I went to see Metric tonight. One of the greatest gigs I've been to of all time. Fantastic considering the shite venue that is the O2 Oxford.
Re: What are you playing tonight?
I hear what you mean generally, I'll be less kind and call BYT fecking shite; but Hendrix, Buckley and even SLF with Johnny Was have produced very, very good covers (without wanting to regenerate old 'covers' threads). One of my favs, Frank Turner is up there with the best in making other peoples songs his own (I love the Postal Service- bloke from Death Cab if you don't know them, well worth a listen- but his cover of The District Sleeps Alone is eerily good, and very much 'his' as is his cover of a great Lemonheads song, 'The Outdoor Type') so a band as good as CC ought to able to do some good covers if they are songs they want to do ( I have a, quite possibly made-up, memory of BYT being the theme to a film, and a bit commercial?).Bruce Rioja wrote:I haven't listened to Underwater Sunshine - I think I'll see if I can find it on spotify though. Anyway, I've found my next target for music. The Barmaid at ours, who very much knows her stuff, recommends in the highest terms Alt J

PS That Tori Amos cover is fecking awesome, like, really good, but, as a caveat, I also enjoy Noel's lot's new album. It isn't 'great' but I stick it on a lot to just listen to.
