I didn't know about Nat's last words. Thinking back to how he was so proud to run out as our captain.

It just makes it even more appalling the club couldn't put up £35k (or around a week of Tuncay sat on his arse) for a statue.

I'd say he will possibly the club's most memorable player ever and for a lifetime's service they couldn't find the money.

They're very quick to cash in on him though. (Lion of Vienna Suite, Lofty?)

Some things are just worth paying for.

Have the club given a reason why they haven't paid for one?

Some people will use anything as a stick with which to bash the club...

I'm sure that I heard it was because they felt the fans would want to contribute to it.

IMO a better gesture would have been to have the fans whip round, and then double it.

I would prefer it if we all chipped in. He is 'Our Nat' isn't he?

Indeed he is! I'd include the club is 'we' though. Just avoids easy, if unfair accusations if they don't contribute anything. (Do we even in fact know they aren't?)

That's what I meant. And no, I don't know they haven't contributed anything. Although I would expect giving over a portion of land for a permanent memorial with attendant gardens which will require maintenance is a fairly substantial commitment from the club.

I think the council should chip in as well being they never miss a chance to jump on the coat tales of any Whites success, beats road signs to Farnworth's non-existent landmarks!

A group of supporters initially approached the club about erecting a statue of Nat with the express intention of raising the funds through contributions (it costs about £100K to cast a 9ft bronze statue) I'm not sure what the total currently stands at but i expect the club/players will probably chip in if necessary.

True, the family and the club decided that the people of Bolton, and around the country may like to contribute to a statue of OUR Nat, I don't have a problem with that. Nat was my childhood hero and I was privileged to meet him on a number of occasions. I'll be quite proud, once the statue and gardens are completed to say "I contributed towards that".

They could be trying to inject a bit of life into the WSL, I guess.

Couldn't agree more with this post. I find it embarrassing that the club can't pay for a statue, a club that had been in the Premier League for over a decade.

As it's already been pointed out I wouldn't be surprised if the cost of the statue is much, much more than £35k (memorial garden included) and of course these things always go over budget, both in resources in labour. It also wouldn't surprise me if the club was coughing up a chunk of the money to bridge the gap between donations and final cost. I'm not sure if anyone has any figure how much similar tributes have cost at other clubs (which could well prove my above statement completely void) but I don't begrudge the club in the slightest for asking for donations, I like feeling i've played a part in the statue being there and paid my own personal tribute (quite literally!). Great man it seems, both on and off the pitch.
