I'd rather be unpleasant than be nice.

Post by coffeymagic » Mon Jul 23, 2012 1:36 pm

Full disclosure.

When i was a lad I used to stand at the back of the Burnden Paddock and join in with all the songs and chants.

ALL of them. Whether they were about plane crashes, dead Blackpool fans or visting players ethnicity.

While I was joining in it never occured to me once that I was doing anything wrong. It was about generating atmosphere and getting behind Bolton OR putting an opposition player off and never did it enter my head that it made me look like a horrible person.

Now I look back on some of the stuff I came out with and feel deeply embarressed by it.

I hope I moved on from this silly behaviour when I was still in my teens.

Saturday was a bit of an eye opener though. Probably because the crowd was so small you were able to hear every song and chant but there was so much 'I'd rather be a Paki than a Manc', 'FTP and the IRA', 'We're not racists but keep England white' (a new one on me), and so on and son on.

Even Rule Britannia makes me wince when it's slap bang in the middle of this awful reportoire.

And I'm not talking about daft wee boys trying to impress their Neanderthal elders here, there were four old-guys behind us who kept up a 90 minute barrage of racist/homophobic abuse at anyone and everyone they spotted.

We were there with our kids and I hope most of it went over their heads but why do people feel the need to go on like this? The 1980's and 90's are behind us now, let's give it a rest eh lads.

I know it goes on everywhere in the world and for many people they may just be singing songs without thinking of the words (like Robbie Williams does) and I love a good sing-song. But let's sing and support the club with pro-Wanderers chants because at the end of the day we're at a football match and not an EDL rally.

Pretty grim at times.
I'm not asking you to 'think outside the box' I just wish you'd have a rummage around in it once in a while.

Couldn't agree more. There is no need for any of the horrible stuff that is shouted at matches.

This behaviour, more than any managerial decision; more than any run of sub-standard performances by millionaire 'players'; more than any ridiculous increase in ticket prices; more than any relegation; more than anything else, would be the thing that could keep me away from live football.

I've witnessed it myself, and I suspect met a few of the people you came across when I went to watch us at Macc Town ( viewtopic.php?f=4&t=22957 )

There is no place for it anywhere. I don't know what else to say.

Excellent.

I can still insult Scousers & the French though, right ??
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Childish, mindless, pathetic.....i could carry on but you get my drift. Sadly we have an element of racist and bigoted fans who bring shame on our club and it can't be too soon for me that we identify and rid them from all BWFC matches so the rest of us are not subjected to the vile torrent of abuse they continue to spout.

I used to do all the singing too, but even as a kid i knew it was wrong to sing about plane crashes and about preferring to be a certain type of asian than a certain type of persian. But surely to god you grow out of it, i cant believe grown men with kids still do it to be honest.

Even at the risk of getting chinned it would be worth saying something to these idiots. Surely there's enough decent folk around that if 1 or 2 tell them to knock it on the head they'd get back up? Wembley embarrassment aside, I haven't followed us away for a while so I dont know how bad it can get. Spose you could always report it to a steward? although I realise that might not be an option at Hamilton Academicals

Wembley was one of the worst experiences off the pitch as well as on it. I've got no objection to people getting shit-faced if that's what they choose to do, but when they start threatening everyone and anyone within range because they can't handle their drink, a line has to be drawn.

It's just embarrassing that in this day and age some supporters refuse to see that they are not welcome, their attitudes are not welcome and we shouldn't tolerate it, ever

If I wasn't with the wean then I would of had no problem turning around and telling them to pack it in.

The only reason I kept schtum was because I thought the majority of it was going over his head (although he has now started shouting 'E fell ovah' when he commits a foul on FIFA). If I'd have said something I would then have to either a) start an embarressing row or b) start a load of explainations neither of which wouldn't have affected the knobbers behind us or changed their opinions.

Listen I love a good moan at the Wanderers as much as the next man but EVERYTHING they said was negative.

anti-Manchester, anti-Scotland, anti-anything other than white, anti-anything other than heterosexual.

I can imagine them all going home to their dismal lives and offensive families.

Honestly.

I was sitting a few rows in front of these guys in the first half with my son (who's 7) and was shocked by some of the chants,
none of which I've heard on visits to the Reebok.
I'm sure most of what they were singing went above his head, apart from him complaining about the noise they were making.
Perhaps it was the small crowd that made it seem so bad.

I thought they were singing "We're not racists we just love the Whites" rather than keep England white, but maybe I just look for the good in everyone!

Anyway hope Diamonds put up a better show at the Accies next Saturday than the Whites.

The sooner this sort of thing is stamped out the better.

Trouble is you'll have people who say "its part of the fun of football", which it clearly is not. Football is not an excuse to say or do what you like.

At the same time, drawing the line is not easy, because a lot of the tradition of football crowds could be eradicated if you draw the line in the wrong place.......

 or more or less any player playing for a top 4 club.

But that aside, it is an emotive sport and subject and in the heat of the moment people get carried away.

I don't think that completely sanitising it is the answer, but equally there is no place for racism or homophobia. But drawing the lines clearly in a crowd of 20 odd thousand isn't easy.

If it is the same guys that I mentioned in my previous post, then they are banned from the Reebok, and only get to watch Bolton away from home, and outside the top leagues. That was the impression I got when I met them, or people with a similar outlook to them, in Macclesfield.
