Shame about Trampmere's late goal, another set piece where we looked vulnerable. Shame as we looked pretty safe at the back otherwise, with Lonergan only needing to make one serious save. Mills and Ream would be my preferred centre back pairing now, and I've got an inkling that Riley might get the nod ahead of Mears.

Pratley did nowt wrong and Mavies played a few good balls. Chungy looked sharp and Eagles didn't really get in to the game. Sordell was pretty quiet but Afobe was very impressive and took each goal really well, which is pretty encouraging.

Two Bolton fans (a bloke and a woman) kicked out after they jumped up after our first goal when sat in the Tranmere end for some reason. Must admit it was a little entertaining to see the woman try to take on 30 Tranmere fans and half a dozen stewards!

You may well be right re Ream, Mills and Riley but I'd expect Bogdan and Ricketts to come in. Andrews and Petrov will be in the side if fit and I'm guessing it'll either be KD alone up top or (more likely) KD-or-Ngog with Afobe-or-Sordell, so with Chungy generally impressing pre-season that just leaves one central midfield slot for Mavies or Pratley, until Holden returns or A Defensive Midfielder appears...

Aside from the assumption that we'll be playing 442, how did Davies get to be the automatic candidate? He's not good enough for the Championship. We've known that for years.

Have just read transfer thread. If we sell Mavies and don't buy a match-ready midfielder, I can see a perfect storm of KD and Pratley starting and failing in a defeat at Burnley. This would not be a happy place...

I guess picking sordell and Afobe in the same side wouldnt work,Theyd offer far too much mobility and threat by the sound of it.With KD in the team no one need worry about thinking where to pass,and with NGog there there's less danger of us taking a lead too early in a game.
KD and NGog might be better at holding the ball up I suppose.How did Afobe and Sordell look in that area?

I only managed to catch the games he didnt play in!
Maybe it's naive to think players you havent seen much of are better than those you've seena lot of but NGog and KD were pretty toothless last year.Likewise it was way too easy to walk through the midfield. The bit I saw of Vela suggested he can tackle and has a reasonable range of passing which in a 442 should be the first priorities for either of the central pair.
If Sordell and Afobe have pace power mobility hold up/link up play and an eye for goal why would we still be starting with KD and to a lesser extent NGog?

On the subject of is/isn't SKD 'good enough' I think it all depends who he's playing against.

If he's up against yer traditional British clogger who sees a game of football as nothing more than a battle of brawn then he's good enough to play a part, perhaps coming on for the last 20 minutes to cause a bit of a kerfuffle.

If he's against anyone with any skill, pace and half a braincell to rub together then....nah.

You can't fault the guy for his effort and I appreciate he's run himself into the ground for BWFC but when he's on the pitch, no matter how well/badly he's doing we always revert to the one tactic.

Giving them the ball back.

I'd love to see us hold on to the ball. I really would.

On the subject of our centre forwards - just got back from the Halifax game, which we lost, was really disappointed with Tom Eaves just as I was against Radcliffe a couple of weeks ago. Had high hopes for him after his screamer at OT against United in the Reserve Cup Final a couple of years ago I thought he might start to push on to maybe push for a chance in the first team up front - but he looks lazy and his touch isnt great.

He looks like he should have the build and power to dominate defences but he just gets pushed around all the time, a big let down for me

Sounds like he's at least half way to "nailed on selection" with those attributes.
