Advice for Mullayo going to Bolton vs Forrest, Friday Aug 24

Greetings all. Mullayo here.
For those that don't know me I've been a fan and contributor here for 7 years now, but because I live a long way away (NZ, Japan, Australia) I've never been to a Bolton game. Next week, I'm flying from Sydney Australia to Wroclaw Poland for a month long CELTA (Teaching English as a 2nd language ) course.

However, my flight lands in Munich on Aug 21 and my course doesn't start until Aug 27 so I was considering coming to see Bolton v Nottingham Forrest at the Reebok on Friday Aug 24. So I'd appreciate any advice I could get - especially as I'm on a budget.


1) I used Skyscanner and there is a return (23 or 24-25th) from Munich to Manchester in the morning on Singapore Air for GBP 125-ish is that a good deal?

2)Is there a cheap hostel or something in Bolton near the ground so I could dump my bags, shower, sleep etc.?

3) What area should I get tickets for within the stadium to A) be amongst Bolton supporters and B) get a good view? Do I need to book or can I rock up?

4) Where is a good place to get a beer in before and/or after? Anyone keen for a quiet one?

5) Where exactly is that Phoenix Nights nightclub?

6) Is there anything else touristy amazing to do in Bolton/Manchester area that you'd recommend?

7) Anything glaring I've forgotten?

Yes, that's fine. That's quite cheap and they're better than EasyJet/Ryanair.

We don't really do hostels so much over here, but you could look for somewhere in Manchester. Only thing nearthe ground is the 'Holiday Inn' which I suspect is quite reasonably priced but I don't know exactly.

3) What area should I get tickets for within the stadium to A) be amongst Bolton supporters and B) get a good view? Do I need to book or can I rock up?

You can just rock up and buy a ticket in amongst the home fans - where depends on whether you'd prefer to be behind the goal or to the side. Perhaps call and tell the ticket office that you'd like to be on the halfway line towards the back of the lower tier?

4) Where is a good place to get a beer in before and/or after? Anyone keen for a quiet one?

There is Scotts at the ground. Sadly I won't be able to make it to this one.

London's only 2 hours away.

There's a YMCA hostel near Manchester Deansgate station. Plenty nice bars around the are and you can get a train to Horwich Parkway from there.. In manchester, there's alo the National Football Museum at urbis, which is free and apparently excellent..

There's a few pubs and eateries around the ground too for matchday..

Hey! If he's an uber-fan he can visit St Gregs on Church Street in Farnworth, which was used as the location. Though anyone who travels thousands of miles across the planet to visit Farnworth probably needs help.

What they're telling you Mullayo, is that Phoenix Nights was pure TV fiction, although, as Verbal said, the location was an actual place.

Several of my friends from outside the area have asked me to take them to see it when they've been at mine.

I see you can catch a train from under the airport to Horwich Parkways is that the best way to get there GBP 3.80?

PS I know Phoenix Nights was fiction - pretty funny actually - and the nightclub singer in it hosts the official season review DVDs!

Err...there's the town hall in Bolton??

Depending on what time of the year you visit there's often sightings of scrawny old bolton fans bearing there backside after participating in certain forum betting syndicates

Yeah train is probably best - certainly the easiest and quickest way for you. Might be busy on the way back mind

Can't help on beers though I guess others can help.

You can actually go to St Gregs if you like. Couple of people my family know who are fans of the show came and looked at it. Can promise it's too inspiring, like.

I would probably suggest the Travel Lodge in Bolton if you want to stay somewhere cheap. £36 for the Friday night. Close to the railway station and the town centre if you want to stay local.

I would probably avoid the YMCA if you can.

Premier Inn 10 minutes walk from the stadium, 29GBP for the Friday night if you book in advance. Not the greatest, but as you just need a bed for the night, should be ok.

accomodation - there's also the Premier Inn/Travel Lodge at the Beehive, cheap and cheerful and within walking distance of the ground. not as cheap but De Vere's at the stadium is nice

pubs - scotts already mentioned, barnstormers if you like your real ale, frankie n benny's and chicitos on middlebrook...the Fan Zone may also be open, not sure though as yet.

things to do - if it's the first time you've been try and get a tour of the stadium scheduled in so you can see a bit more

That train is the best one.. And stops at Deansgate. If you choose to stay in Town there's a bar near Castlefield (not far from the YMCA) that has over 150 different brands of beer from all over Europe. If I remember the name (somebody else might know it - little place on the bottom of Deansgate near Evuna I think.. Shit hot jukebox) I'll let you know. If you're staying in town, I'll take you for one after work.
