Re: owen out 2012/2013
IF we were looking for a new manager I wonder if we'd go down the route of appointing the opposite style manager of the one we just had.
Allardyce - often functional, egomaniac, wants to control whole club, attention to detail.
Lee - very much a coach, ambition of playing style beyond ability of players/himself, team were soft.
Megson - Very functional, dour/negative, supposed to make team hard to beat.
Coyle - Disney levels of positivity, no attention to detail.

No just this once lets please go the middle way. You know it makes sense.Athers wrote:IF we were looking for a new manager I wonder if we'd go down the route of appointing the opposite style manager of the one we just had.

I'd rather see us in the 4th division than ever see Megson back at our place. As I've said before - I've now been watching our lot every season for 38 years. In that time only one man has ever put a stop to it.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Its all opinions, but I'd swap him for what we've got now.....Bruce Rioja wrote:I'd rather see us in the 4th division than ever see Megson back at our place. As I've said before - I've now been watching our lot every season for 38 years. In that time only one man has ever put a stop to it.
Not that it would happen and there are others out there I'd far rather us get.

If we're giving it to columnists, we might as well hire Will Self...IggyTheDawgster wrote:He always seems on the ball (Pardon the pun) in his BN column.thebish wrote:just a know-nowt coyle stooge, I hear!IggyTheDawgster wrote:If we're giving ex-players a shout then I can't look any further than Sir McGinlay.

I'll say it again, I'd be very wary indeed of hiring exes *just* because they once wore the shirt. Bruce made an intriguing case for Hierro but I'd rather be hiring someone with management experience, and although SJMcG got a bit Stateside I don't think it'd rack up against some of the other contenders we should be presented with.
Hiring an old boy always involved at least some misty-eyed romanticism, and I've had enough of that with the current manager.

Just some fckr who can organise how we operate at dead-balls would be a start.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

in that case you've lost me - cos that's not what we are talking about... you yourself said that pretty much any numpty-headed-manager except Coyle could get this particular squad back into the premiership simply by turning up every day!

Yep but if Coyle looks like he may take us up, Gartside (who is hardly trigger happy) won't fire the bullet.thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote: My point being a manager would prefer a club struggling in the premiership to one struggling in the championship!

The only way Coyle will go is if we're not pushing for the top 6.
Hence we'll be looking for a manager as a mid table or *shudder* "struggling bottom half championship" side.
Re: owen out 2012/2013
nahh - it'd be (in your words) a squad stuffed with premiership stars well above the standard of this league just ripe for anyone with half a brain to manage to a late storming promotion without even having to break sweat...BWFC_Insane wrote:Yep but if Coyle looks like he may take us up, Gartside (who is hardly trigger happy) won't fire the bullet.thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote: My point being a manager would prefer a club struggling in the premiership to one struggling in the championship!

compared to many clubs - Gartside is fairly trigger-happy... if coyle went in the next few weeks, what do you think the average manager-incumbency-length at Bolton would be since Big Sam left?
Re: owen out 2012/2013
but - look - if you insist that is is a certainly clear cut as you say it is, then I guess that's that.
I just don't think it is an question so easy to define/judge - there being so many factors at bay

It's good that Spearing has come in and given us an excuse to believe Owen can get things right. He's certainly reduced the wage bill and has now put together his own team so maybe it's a good point to take stock of his signings(decisions upon which managers are ultimately judged....)
Mears- got his own thread here but I dont think he's as awful as some seem to believe
Ream- OK so he falls over when there's a gust of wind and is as effective in the air as Willie Morgan but surely there are other qualities a centre half needs?
Mills- it's early days, just needs a lighter pair of boots.Poor man's less scary Taggart
Wheater- Slow but still easily OCs best defensive signing which is why he wasnt picked for ages I assume. We will miss his threat up front and his shear gutsiness.
Alonso- Meh who says a fullback needs pace, anticipation and a spring.Decent left foot but not a fullback. 2.2million? Really? Better work out his best position Owen.
Eagles-Bit hot and cold and not one for the trenches but an astute signing for the price and could have a blinder this season especially if he plays behind the striker rather than out wide. Offers far more threat than Mavis and can actually cross a ball too.
Pratley- Long term contract, appears to have completely lost confidence.Useless in a 442
Petrov-Half a success as he turns up for half the games.wasted really as we still dont have any strikers willing to attack the front post
Andrews- I think he's ok at this level. Solid signing
Holden- The one true diamond in the rough.Hope he plays again.Maybe the law of averages dictates that if you sign enough one will be a gem.
Wylde- Apparently a squad standard player,3rd choice winger, didnt we want to pay money for him originally
NGog-Decent sacrificial lamb in a 451 but doesnt believe in himself as a goalscorer and shys away from getting in positions where he will miss good chances
Sordell-Seems willing to have a go and get in positions but suffers from scoopy clown feet and buttered 50p head.Early days though.Very odd that he wasnt used when we were desperate for goals last season.I fear that will start to make sense as the season unfolds.
Eaves-impulse signing cos he scored a couple against us pre season.Only 200 grand so it doesnt matter.
He has made a couple of good loan signings in addition to a couple of equally poor ones and NRC was a decent signing last season.Overall though he appears incapable of judging a defender or a goalscorer and with the exception of Holden (maybe now Spearing/Andrews) his midfield signings have all been hit and miss types who drift in and out of games depending on how far up against the wall our backs are.
Questionable whether we would get half the outlay back on most of these should we try to sell them.
It's still a squad strong enough to go up if Spearing works and a little attention is paid to being organised when we dont have the ball. It's not exactly rocket science.Maintain some degree of compactness and competitiveness and there is enough with Eagles,Petrov,CYL and if he turns up Mavis to create the number of chances necessary for us to be winning games fairly easily. If however coyle continues to play his open end to end game then we will be outscored because we have a poor back 4 no matter how you rearrange it and we have strikers who arent goalscorers(unless afobe or perhaps less likely sordell suddenly hit a run of form)
451(with eagles in a free role and Mavis coming on to prove a point if Eagles is having one of his frequent off days) remains the best use of the personel he has available.I hope coyle proves me wrong but I suspect he will stick with 442.lt might work with Spearing and Andrews in the middle making us a little tighter but I suspect 442 would leave us an entertaining top ten side(which may be enough to keep coyle in work) whereas 451 would leave me confident that at worst we'd make the playoffs.
Still reckon he'll be judged ten games in and Spearing if it doesnt come off will be his last signing.

Abdoulaye Faye hitting both posts. Used to love Faye for winning these sort of headers. He was a free transfer and we should've looked to have signed him again. He's still got it. I'd certainly favour him in the heart of defence as opposed to Knight and Ream (niether of which look anywhere near as good as Faye).

Re: owen out 2012/2013
Positions like the one we're currently in are very hard for a manager to recover from. A poor year, relegation and then a poor start is going to knock the stuffing out of any team and, sadly, that's what has happened to us. I wanted to see how we started, keeping optimistic that we'd get off to a strong start but that simply hasn't come. We can not, under any circumstances, be losing 3-1 to Hull. It's unacceptable. The scoreline isn't so bad and I don't mean to diminish Hull but the problem is how we are actually performing. Not threatening enough up front, too easy to get through at the back.
Morale plays a big part in these things but it's at that point where you doubt our morale will ever recover against whilst Coyle is in charge. We needed a boost, such as a good couple of wins against Burnley and Derby or maybe a big signing in the transfer window but that simply hasn't happened. We're playing badly, the mood is down around the club and with the fans and I just don't see how anything will change unless Coyle is removed.
I'll give him one more full game in charge. If we lose or underperform yet again, he should do the right thing and quit.
