Coyle's top 3 signings
I thought I'd pose this question as a way to look at Coyle's signing record.
Holden, I think most would agree, is his best signing. But who is his second best signing? And, since it's th'Olympics, who'd get the bronze?
I'm struggling to answer this. With Megson, you'd be looking at LCY, Ricketts, Cahill, Taylor, Klasnic, Knight, Mark Davies, heck even Elmander delivered a bit. From that lot, Cahill 1, LCY 2, Klasnic 3 for me.
Anyway - back to Coyle. Second best... Chris Eagles? Third... it gets very difficult very quickly.

Re: Coyle's top 3 signings
The problem with most of the signing is that Coyle doesn't give them a chance and seems to be an expert at draining confidence. Sordell as an example, I personally think he could easily score 20 goals for us this season.. But..
under a different manager.

Re: Coyle's top 3 signings
Weve never had a manager who has pissed so much money up the wall. £2 mill on a fooking one season man from the states...
Anyway resigning Knight looks ok at the moment. Eagles is fine. Holdens injury prone. Wheater was good but dickhead didnt pick him.

Wheater, Holden and Eagles. If you include all his signings, Wilshere and Sturridge were two excellent bits of business too.
I think Coyle has done alright in his transfer dealings. He's not brought in quality like BSA did but he hasn't signed many bad players either. Few stars but not many stinkers either.

It says something when someone who has been injured for the majority of his Bolton career gets the vote when the manager has been here for so long. In my opinion Holden doesn't get it for that reason.Owen'sEleven wrote: Holden, I think most would agree, is his best signing. But who is his second best signing? Nigel Reo-Coker had a bigger impact at this club and he was only average.

Ream - £2.5 million
Alonso - £2.2 million
Ngog - £4 million
Sordell - £4 million
Players like Pratley and Mears deserve a mention too because he's played them and they are crap. The jury is still out on Mills.

£2M in wages + loan/agent fees for Tuncay.
Petrov should be in a top 3 for Coyle, surely.

Re: Coyle's top 3 signings
Ream isn't bad at all and he could easily prove to be worth £2.5m in a couple of years time. He didn't do badly last season and you have to consider that he's only had around a year in England. Before that, he's been in America and only a professional for 4 years. He's got a long, long career ahead of him and there's no doubt in my mind that he'll improve and become a good defender. He's shown glimpses of potential and at the end of last season, him and Wheater forged a good partnership.Whookam wrote:Really?SmokinFrazier wrote:Wheater, Holden and Eagles. You also have to consider that our defence as a whole under Coyle has been pretty sub-standard. I think it's a bit misleading when one of them performs or gets caught out of position consider the lack of coordination between them all. There are failings in the defence and individuals are often criticised for them but I think there's a bigger issue than just their ability.
As for Alonso, he's shown potential too but that year out of football really hurt his progress. I think the jury is still out on him but if he does fail at the club, I think a big part of it will be due to these constant niggling injuries. It happens in football, I guess. Even the best clubs sign a player only to have him massively underperform because of injury. The lad is still only 21, so it's a bit early to dismiss him as a poor transfer.
N'Gog is probably worth £4m. I don't rate him highly but there are plenty of similar players who move around for similar money. He tries hard and I think he'll develop into a good player when he reaches his prime.
Sordell is young and English, so £4m was a steal! If he gets 4 more goals this year, we'll have Liverpool sniffing around for £23m or something. Come on, the lad has played, what, 5 games for us? He's still fitting in and getting used to the rest of the team.
Pratley was a free transfer and he will run all day for you. I don't rate him but he's cost the club very little and he's useful as a sub due to his workrate.
Mears has played a handful of games for us and I'd expect him to be rusty for a while yet. Maybe he'll never improve, I don't know. Injuries like the one he had can be overcome but sometimes they just ruin a players career, so I hope Mears isn't one of them.

Re: Coyle's top 3 signings
I understand people's frustration, but it's worth bearing in mind that spending 2,3,4 mill in the Premier League is not much. It can be done successfully, just not all the time. Occasionally you'll get a gem, more often than not you'll get a 2mill player.Whookam wrote:Really?SmokinFrazier wrote:Wheater, Holden and Eagles. Likely enough the next man in will have little to spend so we had better not expect too much.

In reality though his best signing (for him) was his contract, It seems to mean we cant get rid of him!

You think Ream is ok. I'd wager that sums up the rest of your post, but I didn't bother reading after that stunner in the first sentence.SmokinFrazier wrote:Ream isn't bad at all and he could easily prove to be worth £2.5m in a couple of years time. Feel free to list his terrible games form last year. He was one of the few players at the end of last season who wasn't awful.BWFC_Insane wrote:You think Ream is ok. By the way, according to you, Ream is good on the ground but not so good in the air, which I'd agree with. You're quite obviously - like many on here - buying into all this petulant hyperbole around the club.
Re: Coyle's top 3 signings
Ream was terrible away at Newcastle last year, and in at least one other game. He's never looked overly convincing and has been embarrassing so far this season.
1) Eagles - I wasn't his biggest fan, but to be fair, he can be proud of his performances in a white shirt. Has delivered pretty much what he was expected too when we brought him in.
I'm struggling after that. Reo-Coker followed by Petrov probably. I don't think NRC is very good at all, but at least he can say he earnt his wages. Petrov took a long time to get going, but looks as though he'll make up for it if he ever makes it back onto the pitch.
