What, Zat or Joe?!bobo the clown wrote:No idea who the ref. was. Wonder if turned out to be Knight, or Riley ??

Soccerbase says the ref for Bolton 2-3 Leeds on Sat 18 April 1998 was Jeff Winter. Was that the first day we played 3-5-2?
Branagan, Cox, Bergsson, Fish, Todd, Jiminho (Salako 70), Frandsen, Sheridan (Giallanza 82), Thompson, Blake, Taylor. Unused subs Jaaskelainen, Taggart, Johansen.
Goals: Thompson 56, Fish 89; Haaland 16, Halle 34, Hasselbaink 85

I feel sick just thinking about that disallowed goal, we used to get mullered with loads of "big club biased" decisions.bobo the clown wrote:There WAS nothing wrong with it. A ball cut back from the by-line which he headed cleanly in & he was given off-side. The ref & linesman later agreed that it was an error as, of course, a pass backward cannot be an offiside. Two games from end of the season & we went down on goal difference.Loyal White wrote:His 'goal' against Leeds would have kept us in the Prem that season.BWFC_Insane wrote:I'll add in Gaetano Giallanza......not sure on spelling...
I didn't see anything wrong with it...
I'll throw Ian Marshall into the mix.
Nothing that goaline technology would alter of course.
No idea who the ref. was. Wonder if turned out to be Knight, or Riley ??

I think the 'goal' that wasn't given against Everton that season was a far bigger injustice, especially as we'd have got two extra points from it.
Also remember we had two goals disallowed in a 1-1 draw with West Ham - one of them took so long to disallow that they'd even already played the epilepsy-inducing 'goal' graphic that they used on the screen at the time.

Re: Worst ever XI
I think the Leeds one hurts me most as it was simply a ballsed-up decision with utter disregard to the rules & was inexplicable whereas the Taggart one was an at-speed error.Leyther_Matt wrote:I think the 'goal' that wasn't given against Everton that season was a far bigger injustice, especially as we'd have got two extra points from it.

Also, we did have 37 more games to sort that out,. The Leeds one was with about 2 left so sort of irrecoverable.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

People claim that Elmander was our most expensive mistake... he wasn't that honour goes to Steve McAnespie.... In todays market we'd have paid around the £10m mark for him... £900k for the biggest pile of shite I have ever seen...
Stevie Fulton surely deserves a mention as well... signing the rising star of Celtic's midfield... to discover he smokes 20-a-day just to piss off your disciplinarian manager... allegedly....

Shite he was, but those maths imply that the previous summer's £1.5m signings of both Chris Fairclough and Gerry Taggart would have set us back north of £30m.David Lee's Hair wrote:People claim that Elmander was our most expensive mistake... he wasn't that honour goes to Steve McAnespie....
