Blimey. In lists that contain Southfork and Simpson characters as all-time favourites I'm way out of my depth. Better retire.

Re: Who are you top 5 TV characters of all time?
To be fair, there's a good case to be made about Homer Simpson being amongst the greatest TV characters of all time. How can there not be? Dexter is also a great character. The rest, not so much for me.
Mine
1. Arthur Spooner (The King of Queens)
Probably wouldn't top many people's list, or even be included, but I've laughed more at him than any other characters on TV. He's just brilliant.

3.50 onwards is one of my favourite scenes.
2. Walter White (Breaking Bad)
Next has got to be the main character from the best TV show ever created. The transition the character makes from the first season to the final is unlike anyone else, and it's played amazingly well by the same guy who was in Malcolm in the Middle and The King of Queens. Who'd have thought it?

3. Jack Bauer (24)
The character I've got the most personally attached to. Kiefer Sutherland is incredible and made this character his own. I can't watch anything else with him in it without thinking of good old Jack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKkBzbdiqV0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
4. Stringer Bell (The Wire)
Could have picked any number of characters from The Wire, including McNulty, Bunk and Lester but it's Stringer Bell because it's Idris Elba.

5. Ross Geller (Friends)
Ross is by far and away the best character in Friends, and that's some accomplishment considering how well they managed to build up everyone else.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaMdLQ8XFPA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Honorable mentions - Dexter, Homer Simpson, Robert (Everybody Loves Raymond), JD (Scrubs), Dr Cox (Scrubs), Luther (Luther), Mike (Breaking Bad), Winters (Band of Brothers).
Couple of spoilers in the links obviously, mainly 24 and Breaking Bad.

Lennard Rossiter. Rising Damp.
Ronnie Barker. Porridge.
David Jason. Only Fools and Horses
Jimmy Nail. Auf Wiedersehn Pet
Michael Crawford. Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em
These are in no particular order, but do show my age, and that vintage comedy is far better than the dross currently showing on the telebox

It isn't the list that shows your age, it's this bit -NWhiteley wrote:Lennard Rossiter. Rising Damp.

In my view, there are atleast 3 of those that will never be surpassed in my lifetime, and im only in my early 40's, and im sure that there are many on here that would agree.
There are many more such as
Dermot Morgan. Father Ted
Rowan Atkinson. Any Blackadder
Ronnie Barker. Open all Hours etc
Sid James. Bless This House (Yes, even Sid James in Bless This House)
Etc. Etc, All of which are far better than the modern crap currently polluting the airwaves

Obvioulsly everyone has their favourites, but I find it odd that people dismiss modern TV when in many people's eyes we're in a golden age of TV. It's just not English. It's a pretty common belief that some of the TV that has been made in America over the last 5 years or so is amongst the best ever.

You mean the guy who writes Family Guy?
Okay, I'm convinced that you don't know what good American TV is. I'm not talking about The Big Bang Theory or Jersey Shore.
It appears that you only watch comedy so I can understand if you've not been exposed to the stuff I'm talking about.
At the end of the day it's all opinion. Just makes me laugh when people say modern stuff is rubbish when it quite clearly isn't. People just don't look further than E4 for good TV.

OK now you are putting words in my mouth, i have no idea what The Big Bang Theory or Jersey Shore is, and i dont watch E4,
And yes, i do watch more than just comedy, 24 was very good and is CSI etc, etc etc, as was all of the Star Trek stuff, so im not blinkered.
Oh, and by the way im shit faced, so much of the Yank stuff is currently being forgotten. The classic English stuff is overpowering my thought processes.

Re: Who are you top 5 TV characters of all time?
I'm sorry for assuming, but in a thread about favourite TV characters, out of the 10 shows you've named, all of them are comedy so I thought it was a correct assumption.
