Mick McCarthy has a comparable record of getting teams promoted into the top division and then not really knowing what to do once there. Nobody seems to want him.
For the record, I wouldn't be completely against Mick Mac. I like the bloke and at least he's formationally flexible. He'd presumably apply and we'd be somewhat arrogant not to interview him.
But plays awful football similar to Megson. No thanks.

Someone mention Scteve MaClaren on the last page. Until this weekends loss away at Ajax, FC Twente had the best start to the season by any club in Europe. Not saying we should go for him but he can't be that bad a manager.

Of all the experienced managers out there, Mick McCarthy would be pretty high on my preferred list. McCarthy isn't ever going to get a team into the top half of the Premier League but he is good enough to get a team out of the Championship. He'd bring plenty of structure, which is what we need.

McClaren would be a great pick. Would he want to leave Twente again though?

After his Forest experience, I doubt it. Its a difficult one to be decisive about. He seems to be very forward thinking, but his record is very patchy. A real gamble, and why would he leave? He's probably had enough of England.

Lord knows wht the f*ck Mick has done to fool everyone about his ability. Being a jovial Barnsley lad doth not a messiah make.

I like McCarthy as a bloke, but he picked Ebanks-Blake over Steven Fletcher, like, deliberately. Out of choice. And dropped Jarvis. So he doesn't like left wingers who run at people and put crosses in, and he likes picking workaday strikers over ones who might actually score. Can't fail!

I don't think you would.

I accept football is "different", though I'm not sure it should be.

In reality you are probably MORE likely to appoint someone with mixed success on their CV (Some successes, some less so) than someone who hasn't worked at that level, or the one below it before.

I suppose there is the odd exception. I suppose that there is a slightly different set of parameters.

I'd still say Keith Hill has at least managed a coaching staff and group of players before and achieved results. I'd be very very wary of appointing a manager who has never managed anything before.

But perhaps I'm not a risk taker?
apart from when said "anyone but Coyle"....

I see Solsjkaers representatives have indicated he is interested in the Rovers job. If Venkys do their usual trick of touting big names then going for the cheap option (this time Eric Black) - I'd be happy to give him a go.

Me too. Given there's a derth of proven managers eager to come here, i'd sooner take a risk on someone unknown like Solsjkaer, Gudni, Henrik Larsson, Youri, etc., than McCarthy who is proven to be average.

Coyle needs to go tommorow, soon it wont matter who we get because we'll be too far behind! Two seasons in the Championship will destroy us.

Take away the penalties and i'm sure things would look a lot rosier.

Birmingham 1-1 Draw
Sheffield Wed 2-0 Win
Crystal Palace 0-0 Draw.
As it stands Leeds 1-1 Draw.

Doesn't seem half as bad as:
Birmingham 2-1 Loss
Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Win
Crystal Palace 0-1 Loss
Leeds 1-2 Loss (as it stands)

Take away Coyle and we'd still be in the Premier League.
