I've been a Bolton supporter for very nearly 20 years. This is the worst I've ever seen us.truewhite15 wrote:One thing that keeps being said to me; "Did you see us in the old 4th division? No? Right, so...I'm not allowed to comment because I'm too young to have see us back then, and just because things have been worse in the past, I'm not allowed to voice complaints at the current shite being served up?

Just shows how bad they are when Coyle can play his two wingers on the wrong side for ten minutes and Leeds still couldn't do owt. Bogdan has not had a save to make (from memory) so if I was them I would be happy with a point

Re: Bolton - Leeds
In terms of the last 20 years it may well be. It's not as bad as the teams that gradually slipped down the divisions in the 80s and very nearly put the club out of business but that's ancient history. Yes things can always be worse but that doesnt mean its ok to let them get worse. You could see the club getting into real finacial trouble if the 80s decline is repeated with the expensive stadium and the expensive contracts. At the moment even with poor management this team is not bad enough to go down. Another year of Coyles midas touch in reverse transfer policy could change that though and once the partacjute payment s dry up we'll be stuffed.Whookam wrote:I've been a Bolton supporter for very nearly 20 years. The frustration is that this is a blatantly mediocre championship. Dross from the bottom of the league well capable of beating dross from the top. I cant believe people can be using that as a justification for things being alright. The squad and money behind this wanderers team should mean they are capable of winning consecutive games and should be in the top eight at worst all season. That's not arrogance, not a divine right thing,of course other teams will compete etc. It's purely and simply that our squad was assembled on a low premiership budget that is still well ahead of most championship clubs budgets. A good manager with the resources coyle has had would be doing better.
The upside is that in such a mediocre division there is some element of time available to slip behind because even a team in the bottom 4 going on a good run after xmas could at least make the playoffs. The downside is that it appears the quality in the championship is now so far behind the prem that its hard to see anyone doing anything better than yoyoing without major investment.
A manager should be judged on what they achieve in terms of resources available in relation to their competitors. In that sense coyle is failing. He didnt get the best out of what he had last year,he's spent money very poorly and you just cant see him organising a team well enough to string results together. As such if he stays we will not get anywhere and will miss a golden opportunity to back up leaving us less time with parachute money to put it right. Once the parachute money has gone the future if we are still in the championship will get potentially very bleak.

Feck it, let's play our full reserve side!
Anyway onto the game, good first half, pretty shit second. The penalty looked like their lad was going over before he was even touched but I've not seen the replays.
The Jay Spearing sub, I'm going to assume he was carrying a knock because otherwise I'll just get pissed off if I find out it was a 'tactical' sub, just like his masterclass subbing of Afobe for Sordell. Coyle, wow, what a genius he is.
Right I can't be arsed typing anymore, so I'll just go on the record and say Matt Mills is a fecking awful defender. I get on edge every time he goes near the ball. He makes Zat Knight look a world beater.

Re: Bolton - Leeds
Time for a bit of a reality check maybe? We've lost four goals in four games, not just from opponents' good play but from penalties. That's "four" in four. That just has to be a very relevant cause for concern. Teams in this league are going to take note of it and as long as we give points way in this fashion (four again, minimum, in this case and four in goal difference) we'll go nowhere. Putting it down to bad reffing and bad luck changes nothing. Somebody has to get wise to the facts and realise the danger. Take the penalties away and we'd be up the top end instead of the bottom. It's a fact.

I don't want to deflect fair criticism, but I do think we have been unlucky. That "U" word doesn't excuse some of the poor performances but if we had got a bit more luck, we'd be in a very different position right now. Out of those four, I don't know how many were fair penalties but even if all of them were, a team has to be unlucky to give away four in a row.TANGODANCER wrote:Time for a bit of a reality check maybe? You make your own luck. All four penalties were more than avoidable.

Basically no such thing as luck. All of the penalties have been conceded because of individual errors and/or brain farts and nothing to do with 'luck'.thebish wrote:I know people often say this - but...Leyther_Matt wrote:You make your own luck. I think I made it clear I wasn't talking about luck, just the fact we gave away four penalties. Read it how you will, it's still bad.Putting it down to bad reffing and bad luck changes nothing. Coyle stated anything but promotion was failure, Gartside has set the target of two points per game. I'd say that would be the club positioning ourselves as favourites, no?norm the jedi wrote:What has this got to do with anything. Did Coyle decide we were favourites?truewhite15 wrote:
and pre-season billing as promotion favourites has made it worse - as promotion favourites, we should be far more commanding than we currently are, not scraping draws and losing without a decent chance against teams who should be nowhere near us in the league.
Or was it the same people who decided Leicester were last season.. Etc etc...
What we have is a hugely competitive league of questionable quality.. Where 19th place as of last evening was nearer top on points than bottom... Where Leeds were on a run of 4 on the bounce... Palace who scraped by us on sat went to Wolves, themselves on a run, and beat them more comfortably than they did us.. Top place Brighton ( we'd take gus poyet I suspect?) post a loss and a draw in two home games against 'lowly' opposition
To my knowledge promotion has never been decided 1- by a bookmaker or 2 in October..
We may or may not get up near the top with or without this manager... But what I can't understand is the all pervading arrogance that keeps maintaining that we only have to turn up to piss this division? Because we have the players? Well on the basis of close on two years we don't have the players.. Organisation, tactics yadda yadda yadda yadda... End of the team talk it's 11 v 11 it's about players.. And the season as hardly started.. Management is so massively over rated.. Losing Cahill an Wheater will always cost us more than keeping Coyle..
I make it that only Kevin Davies, Mark Davies and Zat Knight remain from our starting line up 18 months ago and Mark Davies was a bit part player at that time. Five of the rest who started last night were signed by Coyle this year. So, what does two years have to do with anything? The players continue to change, but results are alarmingly consistent.
It's not arrogance for a recently relegated team, backed by a comparatively massive wage bill and parachute payments, to expect to be sat higher than 17th after 9 games. Especially considering we've only played one of the current top six and two of the six teams who finished below the top three last season. We've lost them all.
Incidentally, if we're going to emulate Reading as some seem to still fancy we might, we now need 78 points from the remaining 35 games.

Anyway, as the great Gary Player once said ..... "The more I practice, the luckier I get."
If Coyle & the players worked on stuff there'd be less luck involved, good, or bad.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

Player once came back from seven down to Tony Lema is a matchplay game, and won. That's about fighting back when you're down. Some of that needs to rub off on us right now.
