I once scared the shit out of him outside Ayr United on a Tuesday night singing "there's only one Andy Walker". Fact.

I think it's generally accepted you would take Postman Pat in preference to Owen Coyle Dan.

No would not take for example Roy Keane (as he has been linked with us) even though he is a nutty bar.

Tell you what give me a list and i will tell you yes or no instead of Coyle.

Tony Kelly, England's best midfielder in '93. FACT :)

Well according to Terry Venables and of course Rioch.

Saw him in Tesco yesterday, had a bit of a chat with him, first time I've ever met him, really nice guy.

One of my favourites of all time, I know we've had some amazing players but him and the rest of that Rioch based side will always be the ones I would pick head and shoulders above. Although Jay Jay/Youri are up there too

I'm too young to remember Rioch being in charge!

There isn't too much on YouTube but Rioch was a great manager and went to Gooners way to early for me

Signing Dennis Bergkamp vs signing Fabian de Freitas. Can't think for a minute why he left!

I would love a more neutral viewpoint on how the likes of Stubbs, Zico, McAteer, Thompson, Branagan, McGinlay, Walker et al really rated. As you said in your earlier post those players would most certainly be up there in the eyes of many of us, as evidenced in the 'Best XI' threads, yet I suspect a neutral would think we're crazy to compare Okocha to David Lee, for example.

He left cos his stock was at its highest

The following season was a shambles, but we were doomed even with Rioch

Our form after MacFarland got the bullet was mid-table. If Toddy had kept his nerve and taken the job himself from the off, instead of that wishy-washy joint-manager palava, things might have been very different.

Not buying that. It was a massive learning curve. We were incredibly naive at times, even under Rioch, on our way up. But the quality of our players pulled us through to a point. But the week-in, week-out grind of the prem did for that naivety and enthusiasm.

Its what pisses me off the most about the Todd era. He learnt the lessons in '95-'96, then forgot all about them in '97-'98 because he got away with murder the previous season, simply because he'd assembled by far and away the best squad in that division. So kudos for that. But (through hubris, whatever) he completely forgot the lessons learned only 12 months previous.

Two joint managers - it just smacks of a lack of leadership or direction. A bit like now. We were a disorganised mess. A bit like now. Getting rid of MacFarland meant Todd had to man up, and the improvement was almost instant. A bit like in a few weeks time when a.n.other is at the helm?

And Rioch naive? Swashbuckling, yes. Classy, yes. Naive, no. I can't remember us ever really disgracing ourselves in that three year period. Certainly not on anything like the scale we have witnessed over the last 18 months.

It wasn't an instant improvement though, was it? I'm sure someone can show whether the first few weeks were or not.

And, as I've said, in the context of '97-'98, it would appear that Todd learned cock-all, and that in fact it was the players finding their feet at that level. Either that, or having the experienced Porterfield as his sidekick proved the difference.

Whatever, the fact remains that in his only full season in the top flight he stayed committed to his type of football, whereas in '95-'96 he'd been prepared to be flexible - as an example playing Stubbs in front of the back four.

As for Rioch, well yes, he got out (as Caps says) whilst he still had better players than the oppo. Good organiser etc yes, magician, no.
