Re: Wanderers away at Millwall
One things for sure: tactics aren't going to matter in this match (according to Coyle):
I mean...what?!?!? Sure, if you're Barcelona & you're playing well you'll probably beat pretty much anything in front of you because you're that good, but mortal teams have to think about an opposition's tactics. If you're playing really well with a 4-3-3 & they're playing average with a 5-4-1 guess what: it'll be bloody difficult to 'nullify' them! They might just score from a break too.
If you're a good team having a good day yes, you may be able to render a consideration of a 4-4-3 matching against a 4-4-2 completely needless. If we're so arrogant as to think that we're top-notch and don't have to pay attention to tactics just be 'at yourself' every match no wonder we're underachieving! And the last sentence, hmm that's a thoroughly stupid thing to say & straight off planet Gartside (people in football understand why Megson was appointed hey Gartside? Hmm). Go for it Coyle, get all the top managers together & see if they understand that use of tactics can be 'nullified' & rendered immaterial so easily!
Feckin' furious reading that
(Apologies if already posted, I've not spotted it).“Regardless of what someone else's tactics are, if you are at yourself, it nullifies theirs. People in football will understand that, people out of football won't.”

Everything but the game: Because it's not just a game, it's a way of life.

It is a rather catastrophically hair-brained thing to say.

I remember Kevin Keegan as England manager coming out with the same kind of crap. The look on his face as his infinitely more talented players were nullified by a bunch of better organised Scottish journeyman, showed he still couldn't see how it had happened.

That's always been coyle's approach. It's naive and stupid but not anything new. There is a chance our defensive record is evidence of how successful the strategy of not worrying about the opposition is. You do wonder why he hasnt adapted though after so much evidence that the approach fails. Coyle could well be proof that god does exist and darwin was wrong afterall.

Coyle needs sacking now. Not after a few more games. Not after tomorrow's match. Not even in the morning. Now. This minute.Dartisan wrote:One things for sure: tactics aren't going to matter in this match (according to Coyle):(Apologies if already posted, I've not spotted it).“Regardless of what someone else's tactics are, if you are at yourself, it nullifies theirs. Those words alone mean we effectively have no manager at the moment. Just an arrogant, ignorant fool.

I dunno, what he says isn't, in itself, that stupid. If you ignore the two years of bollocks.
Depends what you mean by tactics.
You don't have to obsess about their shape v your shape, do they have overlapping wingers, they they like to play two or three passes through midfield. Not to knock that approach, but you don't need dossiers. Clough said he never bothered with tactics. Ferguson will say he hasn't changed his tactics depending who he plays. Clough on the other hand would make sure he got his balance right. He'd have a winger on one side, and a wide midfielder on the other (say a Petrov on one side, a Taylor on the other). Ferguson would keep the same 'tactics' but swap an out an out winger in Giggs for workaholic Park, ball-playing Scholes for energy man Fletcher. Some would call that tactics, others wouldn't. Basically I think our Owen has read books about them saying tactics don't win games (meant in a 4-5-1 isn't inherently better than 4-4-2 way) and interpreted that as 'we don't need to defend set pieces'.

i feel we could win 5-0 today and he will still deserve to go the question is does PG have any power at all or is it up to the players to sack him

Re: Wanderers away at Millwall
Clough was managing in a different era and Ferguson has a squad worth hundreds of millions of pounds. A club like ours needs to squeeze out every little bit of advantage it can, whether through training techniques, video technology, or tactics. I think in part that's what made Allardyce successful: nothing was unconsidered, nothing was left to chance.Prufrock wrote:I dunno, what he says isn't, in itself, that stupid.
