Club want new manager to work under director of football (Sammy Lee).

New manager should not make too many staff changes as board feel we've got top staff throughout and many are being promoted to senior roles.

Appleton told up front that OGS is first choice should he want it. No direct contact has been made with him as of yesterday afternoon. But concerns over wether or not he'd be happy leaving the bulk of his staff behind.

Mick McCarthy way down the pecking order.

There'll be money to spend in January if we're pushing the top 6.
Just doesn't feel right to me...

Either we're shit at interviewing, or the source isn't quite right.

I can't imagine we've intereviewed a guy from another club, this quickly. And if we have and told him "you're not first choice" but some bloke we've not spoken to yet is?

Doesn't ring true.

But then again to quote Sammy Lee "nothing surprises me in football".

I would worry that Appleton has done little other than hold a Portsmouth side together under incredibly testing circumstances. Admirable in itself, but he's not really had results pressure to deal with.

My gut reaction, without knowing a lot about Appleton, and just a gut reaction, Appleton and Lee, pair of losers.
The source is Ashley Westwood
Cheers, though I'm going to sound very ignorant now, ermmm who?

To be fair, you were the first person to mention Appleton, but since then the BN and some nationals have picked up on it, so you clearly have a good source. Just all seems a bit odd.

What do you make of Appleton?

He's Appleton's assistant manager at Pompey (And part of the playing staff too, due to the thinness of the squad!!). I'm friends with his brother, who also plays for the team I play for.

As for what I make of him.. Don't know a great deal other than what's already been said. He's a hard bugger though and one you wouldn't cross..

He's popular amongst his players from what I believe but he also commands respect in the dressing room (rather than demanding it), because of his demeanour, his way with words and the size of his shoulders probably!

Wouldn't be a bad option by any means, but personally, I believe there's better (more experienced) available.

I DO think he'll get the job FWIW

Interesting BB, I've read a few interviews he's done, and I do like a few things he's said. Though one or two things I'm a bit wary about.

If you look at the "former ITK Mirror writer" (who is mates with Gartside) he reckons Appleton, Freedman and OGS are top three targets. Given Freedman and OGS may not be willing to move here/expensive to get, I think your "reckon" could well be true. Especially if he impressed......

You can get 16/1 on Appleton if anyone fancies a bet. Mick is still the bookie's favourite.

I'd be wary of putting money on anyone at this stage. Things can change very quickly sometimes, and I can't see us appointing till next week. Plenty can happen in a weekend, let alone 5 or 6 days.

Guardiola for example, I'm sure he's waiting to talk to us........

I signed into my old bet365 account I don't think I've used since THAT game at Wembley (maybe it's my fault!). Still had £8 in there. Result. Stuck it on Appleton. No pressure Boris. Only got 10s, but it's money I didn't know I had anyway, so we'll see what happens.
