Because McCarthy a track record of playing crap, tedious boring football similar to Megson. He also spent over £35m in three seasons (2009 to 2012) at Wolves and they still finished bottom of the Premiership.BL3 wrote:Why? I have no idea who I would prefer as none of the candidates are really outstanding. McCarthy may be one of the better ones but he is not good.
I don't particularly want Solskjær but sometimes the unknown is more appealling than the known.

Re: Now he's gone, who's next?
I don't understand the pessimism about the candidates. Last two times round Coyle was the only one from both lists of potential targets I found it easy to get excited about. How many folk with a consistently good track record do we reckon are going to be enticed by the job? There is going to have to be a compromise either towards people with failure as well as success, or those with not much record at all to speak of.
Solksjaer, Appleton, Freedman and Hill (though Hill doesn't look it!) are all young and highly rated. Not earth-shatteringly exciting, but better than the Souness/Dowie list of 'usual suspects'.
McCarthy is being unfairly lumped in with that lot IMO. Not inspiring, certainly not a genius, but a decent enough manager. Has won this division twice, and kept Wolves up for their longest top-flight spell in decades. Mixed in with that there have been relegations and relegation fights, and he did spend a lot at Wolves, and not pick his best players, but he is hardly on the same ogre list as others. He'd not be my first choice, but he'd not be appalling either.
When Sammy Lee got sacked, we were a Premier League team in Europe. I was very disappointed when Meggo got it, but mainly due to his own record rather than their being any other decent candidates. This time there are three or four I'd be happy with, and another couple I'd not be devastated about.

Agree with it.

They just got 22 million for Jarvis and Fletcher - hardly a disastrous record in the market

I know, I know, nostalgia got the better of me, don't know what I was thinking, although...ohjimmyjimmy wrote:Which part of you ?? I think he could certainly take us back up this season or next. He loves the club, would have respect from players and wouldn't spew out half the nonsense Coyle did. He seems a good fit for the club at this time.
I really hope Billy Davies doesn't come near the club. He could probably secure promotion, but what else after that? Maybe a season of scrapping for draws against teams we used to have down as '3 pointers', before an inevitable slump back down to our current situation.
Roy Keane and Di Canio can stay away too.
Michael Appleton is too unproven for me. Not quite sure why managing a club with piss poor finances makes him the man to take us from the bottom half of the Championship to being a solid Premiership side.
I like the idea of Solksjaer coming over but don't see it happening. If Gartside could pull it off I'd be very impressed mind.
Mick would be an uninspiring choice, the easy option. Proven track record at this level, but we really should be looking at our long term future.
I know i've seen him on Goals on Sunday quite recently and openly admits drink has stopped his career from moving forward, might be bit of a liability?
- Paul Gasgoigne? Just been reading his managerial career on wikipedia, he could do a job for Bolton...

Our usual Mirror man says Eddie Davies will personally pick a manager next week from a shortlist of McCarthy, Freedman and Souness.
This is going to be interesting. Also fascinating that Eddie now seems to have decided to call the shots.
Could be nonsense. Guess we will find out!

Re: Now he's gone, who's next?
I think Souness will get it.
Makes sense, short term appointment, already knows Sammy Lee can be parachuted in on his own to work with the existing set up.
Has advantages from Eddie Davies point of view in that...
a) One of the few who would take it relatively "short term".
b) Unlike McCarthy, Freedman, Solskjaer etc would not be asking to bring coaching staff in.
c) Is seen as a hard man who can sort out our soft as shite team.
It all fits.
Thats my thinking behind why it'll happen. Not my personal opinion on whether it should by the way!

Well yes but Lee has worked for Souness before as coach when he was Liverpool manager.......Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Fookin hell. I knew Ed Byrne. Doesn't mean I'm on Mock the Week next weekBWFC_Insane wrote:

In fact it was Lee's first job in football coaching. I'm guessing you've never worked for Ed Byrne.
Slightly different proposition.
My point was that McCarthy might be loyal to "Terry Connor" and want him in. Likelihood is, that Souness would be prepared to work with Lee.
Saves Eddies money.....
