Better record at getting teams promoted from the Championship? Because that's the priority.
Agreed entirely. I'd pick McCarthy over the two. But Souness I believe had one go at taking a side up and did with Blackburn, then kept them there.

He kept Southampton up for a year as well.

In fact I don't think he's been relegated in his career (not in England at least).

So on pure record he's ahead of Mick if you judge it like that.

Perhaps this is all a sneaky plan, float Souness' name around so that the likes of LK are "happy" when Mick is appointed?

I know I'll be in the minority, but I wouldn't mind Souness or McCarthy.

No wonder they're so f*cking terrible at keeping the likes of me happy then, seeing as...

Sorry misread your post. There is of course, always Freedman in there. Though he is another of Nixon's "managerial friends". So I guess you'd not be entirely keen on that either......

If you'd invested 100M of your money into a club that was (when you started investing) up and coming in the premiership, about to go four seasons straight in the top ten, then you find yourself struggling through successive managerial appointments and ultimately 18th in the championship, I suspect you'd be thinking "feck this, I'm going to start calling the shots round here".
True enough although in business, I imagine the chief executive would be out on his arse if that were the case o does Gartsides continued presence suggest that we may be over doing Eddie's boardroom take over?
I suspect Gartside's contacts in football are invaluable. I doubt Eddie Davies has the time to chase up managers and players agents, do deals, run the club etc.

But perhaps Eddie wants to make the big decisions rather than letting Phil have as free a remit as before...it makes sense.
It's worth remembering that whilst we all think of ED as being backseat because he isn't chairman himself, and isn't on the board, the reasons for that aren't necessarily a lack of interest, but that he can't be, the tax-dodging shithouse :D

Freedman now favourite, be surprised if he goes though.

McCarthy out to 8s in some places

Dear Jesus. How much will he pay for Jean-Alain Boumsong this time? Hope it's an ill-advised storm in a Chinese-whispered teapot.

As an aside, because I really don't want to think about Souness, wouldn't there be somewhat of an overlap between a technical director and a head of coaching, the two new positions named by former insider Alan Nixon?

I read it as, head of coaching = glorified assistant manager.

Technical director = Director of football role from academy to first team....or sommat like that.

It's a reading of it, I'll give you that. Would there still be a first-team coach? Wouldn't the Head of Coaching also oversee the coaching of the development/academy? Or is that the Tech Direc?

I may be wrong, but I get a sneaking feeling that someone may be plucking titles from their arse...

I'd see the next couple of weeks what happens with Philips n Lee tbh things in the background look like they've changed pretty rapidly with the Pretenders departure lets see how that translates to games. I mean I don't think we have too much to lose by giving them a few games and seeing what they produce fook me Garty gave Coyle the equivlant of eternity before he realised he'd made a knob of himself again!

would happily take souness. tbh i wanted him when sammy lee was canned. i think he's underrated & has a decent understanding of the game, and would give them a good kick up the backside.

the downside to him is that he has a tendency to fall out with players. but i'd take him in a heartbeat.
