Basically, some thick as pigshit Bolton fans rang in and asked him stupid questions which he answered well.

But basically he was pretty impressive and actually seemed to have some knowledge behind it.

Time will tell of course. But I like what I heard.

Especially about putting a structure in place that allows young players to come into the side without immediately struggling under pressure.

And about how he likes to relate to players, and how modern day footballers dont react well to old school bellowing, but that you need to take a more subtle man management approach to maximise performance.

So he has a good personality then

Thought he came across very well. He sounded a bit like Bruce Rioch in his views and expectations. I actually like the fact that he didn't see managing us as the extent of his ambitions. That suggests he expects to be successful here. No one asked him about what targets he'd been set for this season, or whether he'd been given a decent transfer budget, but then again most of the callers i heard seemed to be struggling to string a coherent sentence together.

There were bits of Allardyce and Rioch in there.

But ultimately he's very much his own man.

It's one thing talking it, being able to make it happen is the hard bit.

He does sound genuinely bright and intelligent, which I guess is a good sign.

If anything it sounds like a man trying to break a cycle.
Maybe it's the discipline/free ride swing cycle of different managers that LK refers to? I'm glad we're now heading back to someone who appears to think discipline and respect matter.

True but at least he's making the right kind of noises. It may take some time to change the ethos at the club though and there may well be a few toy throwings and departures I suspect.

Coyle helped to sell Bolton to Freedman

New Bolton manager Dougie Freedman has revealed a conversation with predecessor Owen Coyle was an important factor in him electing to take the Reebok Stadium post.

Freedman left a Crystal Palace side flying high in fourth place in the npower Championship last week to take the reins at Wanderers, where fellow Scot Coyle was sacked having taken 11 points from the first 10 matches of the campaign on the back of May's relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

But Coyle clearly harbours no ill-feeling towards the club he steered to a 2011 FA Cup semi-final, having given his compatriot a glowing assessment. Freedman said: "Owen's a good man, I've known him for many years and he spoke very highly of the club."

He continued: "He was really thrilled that I got the call. He was, without pushing me towards the job, telling me just how good a club it was - how well it's run and not to always believe what you hear in the papers with the financial side.

"He said 'you've got a good squad - they are underperforming'.

"Over the years I've known him, knowing the way I do things, he thinks I'm a good fit. He had a lot of good words to say about the club. It's nice when you can talk to an ex-manager who doesn't really muddy the water and tells you how it is. I know he's a good man so that was important in my decision."

Freedman's parallels with Coyle - a young, highly-rated but largely untried manager upon his appointment by Bolton - have not sat easily with sections of the Trotters' support, who would have preferred a more experienced head after the latter's fortunes plummeted so severely.

Additionally, Freedman leaves a club in Palace where he was a crowd hero during his playing days and allowed to operate without a significant weight of pressure or expectation, as the dark days of administration at Selhurst Park linger fresh in the memory.

As such, the move to the north west could be seen as an undue risk for a talented prospect who took on Palace as his first managerial assignment in January last year. Freedman certainly does not see it that way.

"I don't do this to prove people wrong," the 38-year-old added. "I find in life the only risk is not to take a risk, it's as simple as that. If I go through my management career never taking a risk then we may as well pack up right now. Everything we do is a risk."

Of course results with be the ultimate signal.

He said himself that he's set himself a target for promotion this season. That shows at least he has some drive and will put himself under pressure.

Its clear from what Gartside said that they just want to see a big improvement, if it leads to promotion great, if not then it will have to next year.

No point getting carried away with what a manager says. Absolutely.

But he seems to have a drive and belief (I'd go as far to say arrogance) and crucially A PLAN.

I didn't know a lot about him before, but at the very least I feel he's a different kettle of fish to the last guy, and thats reassuring in the immediate future.

Think the words are "cautiously, very very cautiously, optimistic".

Only way we can be I guess. He's unproven, but seems to have some qualities that we don't seem to have had at the club for a while. Time will tell.

Talks a good game, seems to big on discipline and things being done his way.

Also identified an attitude problem with some players and a general mentality issue.

Obviously, saying he will deal with certain issues and actually doing it are two entirely different things, and a guy coming in tough on discipline will seem like a challenge to those players who feel they rule the roost no matter what. Butif he approaches it right and gets them on side then i'm sure it can be done.
