Re: What are you watching tonight?
No subtitles ??William the White wrote:At the Cornerhouse this eve to watch On the Road. There's loads of booze, drugs and sex and, of course, the Road stretching onwards - New York, Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans, Mexico City as the major work of fiction of the Beat Generation unfolds.
When in my late teens I must have read this half a dozen times and i think I might do so again. The film held me, but i brought my history with me to the cinema. It has a major problem - that the magnetic Dean Moriarty, crazed con-man, sex maniac, jailbird, drug taker and totally attractive (to male and female) object of desire - the epitome of 'mad, bad and dangerous to know' is utterly believable in the book. Film is too literal a medium, though, and neither script nor production has found a way of overcoming this. So the central character comes across as irredeemable to the point that you wonder how anybody could like him, never mind him being the focus of adoring attention from three men and two women, both of whom not only want, but have, his babies...
Still, it's almost always a disappointment when you watch the movie version of a book you really like. This less than some others. If you like he book, you'll probably enjoy this movie. If you didn't, i've no idea. A couple left before the end but most of others seemed very into it.
Only one more day to go though.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

But not tonight - Though I am paying my 5th visit to the Cornerhouse in a week
This afternoon I'm watching Rosa and Ginger, then meeting my wife, doing the reasonably cheap afternoon menu at Felicini and then back to the Cornerhouse for the live transmission from the National Theatre of Timon of Athens, starring Simon Russell Beale. This is set in an Athens ruined by debt because of a profligate government...

Production has rave reviews - starts at 6.45 in about 70 cinemas nationwide.

Watched Skyfall last night. Pretty weak plot drawn out to fill 142 mins. A bit of a disappointment to be honest.
Oh and whilst I'm at it, although I like Adele, the theme song sounds like Vic Reeves doing the pub singer, singing about apple crumble or something. And why does she sing "overdoo" instead of "overdue"? Presumably so the American audience can understand what she's on about. Enough already.

Hope is what keeps us going.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
The production of Timon is very good - great acting all round, very focussed, very clear and direct story telling. It's a troubled play though, the drama is pretty much entirely located in the first half when Timon, the good and generous man, slips into poverty through foolish over generosity to those he considers his friends. Then approaches them for help, and is universally rebuffed. A little morality/fable on the corrupting power of money. He ends up homeless, scavenging for food, and with a profound hatred for all of mankind. This section of the play has some great poetry, particularly a lengthy reflection on the corrupting power of gold. But the drama is tenuous. It's not surprising that the play is little performed.William the White wrote:I expect I'll put that right soon.bobo the clown wrote:No subtitles ??

Ginger and Rosa was a nice little Brit movie about female friendship and coming of age and the early 1960s, banning the bomb, finding sex, being terrified at the Cuban missile crisis. Three stars. Maybe two. Heart in he right place. Drama not really sharp enough.
Three on the run at the cornerhouse and no subtitles...

Saw Ruby Sparks. It's ridiculous. Stupid sentimental drivel. Also can't stand watching that Paul Dano! How has he made it big!? He's the most irritating screen presence ever. I loved it when Daniel Day Lewis stoved his head in in 'There Will be Blood'!
