Perhaps you could explain what he meant by the phrase 'got off lightly' then. Can't see how it means owt other than McCann deserved more abuse than he got?
compared to many others who have been unfairly abused by the crowds for little reason other than not being Lionel Messi - some of whom LK names - he got off lightly.

that is not saying he should have had more abuse than he got - rather that he escaped lightly compared to others.
