My post was actually a small comedic serve back into the theBish’s court.
But, having said that, ever since I’ve posted it, the idea of holidaying in Portugal (as opposed to Portugual) has been growing on me. Thinking of driving down through France and Spain as I have friends
What’s at Monserraz, and is it anywhere near to the cork forests?

Re: Today I'm happy about......
doing a bit of research* for this coming sunday's sermon, and came across this...
Ommyade, Sultan of Spain (died A.D. 961): "Fifty years have passed since first I was Caliph. Riches, honors, pleasures - I have enjoyed all. In this long time of seeming happiness I have numbered the days on which I have been happy. Fourteen."
* - or, fannying about on the internet...

Re: Today I'm happy about......
A good line but you need to be a bit careful with those internet quote thingees. His name was not Ommyade. The chap who (allegedly) said this was Abd-er-Rahman III. Ommyade sultan of Spain (891 — 961). Ommyade was the old fashioned spelling of Umayyad - one of the four major Caliphates following the death of Mohammed.thebish wrote:doing a bit of research* for this coming sunday's sermon, and came across this...

A fuller version of the quote is:
I have now reigned above fifty years in victory or peace; beloved by my subjects, dreaded by my enemies, and respected by my allies. Riches and honours, power and pleasure, have waited on my call, nor does any earthly blessing appear to have been wanting to my felicity. In this situation, I have diligently numbered the days of pure and genuine happiness which have fallen to my lot: they amount to Fourteen: - O man! place not thy confidence in this present world!
"If you cannot answer a man's argument, all it not lost; you can still call him vile names. " Elbert Hubbard.

so - in short - it was said by the Ommyade, Sultan of Spain?Montreal Wanderer wrote:A good line but you need to be a bit careful with those internet quote thingees. His name was not Ommyade. I assumed you found it in some internet source like 'Some Deathbed Quotes', where it is written:thebish wrote:so - in short - it was said by the Ommyade, Sultan of Spain?Montreal Wanderer wrote:A good line but you need to be a bit careful with those internet quote thingees. Since this source clearly, but erroneously, implies the man's name was Ommyade and uses the exact words you quoted, I felt the assumption to be valid and tried to help you. However, if you knew all along that it was Abd-er-Rahman and, being an old fashioned chap, prefer the nineteenth century transliteration Ommyade to Umayyad, please accept my apologies. I can only suggest that you do not say either "Ommyade, Sultan of Spain", as you did at first, or "the Ommyade, Sultan of Spain" in your rejoinder, but, since Ommyade is an adjective here, say "the Ommyade Sultan of Spain."Ommyade, Sultan of Spain (died A.D. 961): "Fifty years have passed since first I was Caliph. Riches, honors, pleasures -- I have enjoyed all. In this long time of seeming happiness I have numbered the days on which I have been happy. Fourteen."

No problem - I'm afraid my last response was somewhat disingenuously sarcastic.thebish wrote:yeah - actually - on reflection, good call Mummy!mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Come on, Bish - you're impressed really, you grumpy sod!

Oh, perhaps I should have mentioned, Abd-er-Rahman had a massive harem which included a lot of males. He was reputed to be a homosexual pedophile (OED acceptable spelling). See the martyrdom of Saint Pelagius of Cordova. This story and others may account for his limited amounts of true happiness.

I've read this more than six times now hoping for divine inspiration, but I'm no wiser now than I was then. You're going to have to give me more clues.
