I can heartily recommend the Eastern Algarve LLS. If you do nothing else, hire a car for a few days and explore the interior, it's a beautiful country (although outside the tourist areas, the food is appalling!) and make sure you don't miss Monserraz.

But, having said that, ever since I’ve posted it, the idea of holidaying in Portugal (as opposed to Portugual) has been growing on me. Thinking of driving down through France and Spain as I have friends in near to Andorra.
What’s at Monserraz, and is it anywhere near to the cork forests?

Ommyade sultan of Spain (891 — 961). Ommyade was the old fashioned spelling of Umayyad - one of the four major Caliphates following the death of Mohammed.

A fuller version of the quote is:

I have now reigned above fifty years in victory or peace; beloved by my subjects, dreaded by my enemies, and respected by my allies. Riches and honours, power and pleasure, have waited on my call, nor does any earthly blessing appear to have been wanting to my felicity. I assumed you found it in some internet source like 'Some Deathbed Quotes', where it is written:

Ommyade, Sultan of Spain (died A.D. 961): "Fifty years have passed since first I was Caliph. Riches, honors, pleasures -- I have enjoyed all. In this long time of seeming happiness I have numbered the days on which I have been happy. Fourteen."

Since this source clearly, but erroneously, implies the man's name was Ommyade and uses the exact words you quoted, I felt the assumption to be valid and tried to help you. However, if you knew all along that it was Abd-er-Rahman and, being an old fashioned chap, prefer the nineteenth century transliteration Ommyade to Umayyad, please accept my apologies. I can only suggest that you do not say either "Ommyade, Sultan of Spain", as you did at first, or "the Ommyade, Sultan of Spain" in your rejoinder, but, since Ommyade is an adjective here, say "the Ommyade Sultan of Spain."
