Well, tbh, he's on a long contract ... so we get a proper fee.

There are plenty on here who don't rate him. (personally, I do)

We certainly don't know how to get the best out of him at present and squeezing him onto the pitch almost no-matter-where isn't good for us or the himself.

It's clear we aren't exiting this league after only a season (well, upwards, at least).

All in all, who would blame him ?

It'd be another severing of a Premiership quality player though.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

He's the only player we have who's adept at keeping possession of the ball.. He doesn't always produce fireworks, but then that's not his job.

We'd desperately miss him.

I'm really totally unsure.

Sometimes he looks like he could be the player to knit us together and drive us forward. Then he flits in and out of games.

By all accounts our possibly best performance of the season, he was missing through suspension from.

I don't think I'd turn down 6M for him at this stage.

If every time we get a decent player, we think of selling him on, particularly in the bottom end of the Championship and still entertaining ideas of going back up, we'll get nowhere. We have to build a side with some stength and quality and get them playing football. Mark Davies is one of our quality players his type are what we need.

How much would it be to keep Butterfield? And how much for a goalscorer? Can we afford £6M?

Can't we just send someone over to teh Scandinavia like we used to?
The players you fail to sign never lose you any money.

Usually id agree but sutely this year has proven we have more pressing matters elsewhere and only a finite amount of resources. If Dougie feels he can re invest the money wisely something even world class managers like Arsene Wenger (and Owen Coyle  ) have/had struggled with. Tis a shame a number of our potential in house replacements (Vela/Holden etc.) have struggled with injury tho.

It should be patently obvious that firepower up front is our big let down. N'gog just isn't doing the business here. He may somewhere else, who knows, but he isn't working here. Afobe hasn't worked and he'll be going back anyway, so unless we sort Homesick Blues out quickly (or not at all and off-load him) we need somebody up front badly. If Chungy recovers his form we can play Eagles in the hole for now with KD up front, but that's a situation that can't last forever (sad but true), but we need some results now and we need them quick. Anelka and Sturridge proved the difference in having somebody good up front and the bottom line is, we have nobody near that quality. Right now Elmander and Klasnic on the sheet would look pretty good.

Which is what my original post was referring to...

But this solution will, barring another Sturridge miracle, come at a price. How would you pay that Tango without cashing on players like Mavies? Someone who is good but not essential to how we play or a huge contributer week in, week out.

I would have thought Dougie will have to offload a few to free up the cash to some in. He's already said the squad is too big. Aside from Chungy and Mavies, who realistically are we going to get more than 50p and a pack of cheese n onion for? I think we have to be open to one of our better players to be sold to give Dougie some freedom in the transfer market. That and the fact strikers tend to cost more.

TD, the other way to look at it is that he's one of the regulars in a team that is 18th in the championship. And even his biggest fans would struggle to say he stands out every game as 'above this level'. He does in flashes but equally as many times he goes missing.

Fact is that we are where we are and it looks now like the only way out this season or ever is to bring in some better players. Whilst it would be great to do that and keep everyone if one player could fetch 6M then a fair chunk of improvements could be made.

Remember we've done well in the past by selling players and rebuilding. Allardyce sold virtually an entire team because he had to, and yet rebuilt into something solid and functional, that took us up.

I don't think it's as clear cut as he's one of our better players so we must keep him. Nor is it clear cut that we should sell him either.

But it's certainly one of those situations that needs to be managed well. A test for Dougie so to speak.

We'd miss him half the time because half the time he disappears. He may fit in ok at swansea given the ethos there though. Like folk said earlier we need a striker more than we need mavis and if it means eagles can play in the hole even better. The squad does need sorting out but unless money is put in by the board we will have to sell someone. There arent that many we'd get decent cash for so 6 mil for Mavis sounds good to me.

I'm not sure that when you take the whole of this season into account that Ngog is doing any worse than Kevin Davies? In fact I'd argue definitively that hes not.

Having only seen one game this season I'll have to take your word for it. Mind you, Tower FM commentators would certainly disagree with you, but hey-ho..
