Re: Wine
I've had a number of Saint-Emilion Grand and Premier Crus and have always been a bit disappointed. It is possible I drank them too young so you should hang on to the 2010 for a few years (hard I know since I failed). I presume the Sancerre is the white from the Sauvignon blanc, in which case you can't go far wrong with that or the Chablis.Bruce Rioja wrote:I've been in Aldi and added to the rack; 2 x St Emilion Grand Cru 2010 @ £9.99 ea, 1 x Sancere 2011 @ £8.99 and 1 x Chablis @ £6.99

Re: Wine
Every lampost in St Emillion has been awarded Grand Cru status Monty, its virtually worthless as an indicator of quality. And Bordeaux as a whole is ludicrously overpriced anyway.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I had a pretty good St Emilion last night. Nice, medium bodied, went well with the lamb. Can't remember the price but was on offer at Morrison.

Re: Wine
Sorry Bruce. If its any consolation, Oz Clarke rates Aldi wines very highly. Most of the time I agree with him, as long as you're buying above McBuckfast (or whatever their version is called).

Re: Wine
They do some very, very pleasing stuff at around the £4 mark. As such, I was expecting absolute nectar at a tenner. I'll let you know how it goes when I open one.Lord Kangana wrote:Sorry Bruce. Re: Wine
Sort of my view, LK, but I was frightened of committing heresy or upsetting Bruce. I'm a Burgundy afficionado (red and white) and whire wines from the Loire. Of course, they tend to be overpriced too - but seldom disappoint.Lord Kangana wrote:Every lampost in St Emillion has been awarded Grand Cru status Monty, its virtually worthless as an indicator of quality. Re: Wine
I'm afraid that the St Emilion Grand Cru is as described by you guys. Don't get me wrong, it's pleasant enough, but is clearly overpriced. I could've bought a Chateauneuf du Pape for less and have known in advance exactly what I'd be getting.

I'm afraid I'm of the view that Chateauneuf-du-Pape is overpriced too. It is true Pope Clement V preferred it to his predecessor, John XXII tipple from Burgundy. However that was in the 14th century and anyway he was mistaken. However, I would tend to prefer it to Saint-Emilion. However, Bruce, I did suggest that you hang on to your 2010 for three or four years to let it improve. I gather you didn't...Bruce Rioja wrote:I'm afraid that the St Emilion Grand Cru is as described by you guys. Don't get me wrong, it's pleasant enough, but is clearly overpriced. I love the peppery-ness of C-d-P, Monty, and love it with a good steak especially.

Re: Wine
As a little pointer, the words "Grande Reserve" mean the square route of f*ck all in French wine nomenclature. Its a bastardisation of Gran Reserva, which means a great deal (by law) in Spanish wine making. That alone makes me wary.
Don't be expecting anything special is all I would say.

Re: Wine
I also like C-d-P but I feel it is overpriced - you can get much better bargains from the Rhone. It was the St-Emilion premier Cru I found disappointing (and overpriced).Bruce Rioja wrote:One opened out of pure curiosity, one on the rack for a whileMontreal Wanderer wrote: I'm afraid I'm of the view that Chateauneuf-du-Pape is overpriced too. Re: Wine
The price makes me wary too since the other C-d-P listed are near twice as much. ASDA doesn't really give enough information to make guesses (if they gave the year I missed it). Wines are much cheaper in England than here so price is not much of a guide for me. I'd go along with LK's view.Lord Kangana wrote:As a little pointer, the words "Grande Reserve" mean the square route of f*ck all in French wine nomenclature. Well I tried the Sainsbury's £4.49 Romanian Pinot Noir mentioned here.Little Green Man wrote:The guy who I always thought was Justin from Gigglebiz (but isn't) listed these a while back

Not sure I'd trust a man who calls himself Olly though.
The search continues.
I will still seek out the £6.99 variety that Waitrose apparently sells, but I am not optimistic.
