I can't imagine anybody except for Alonso and maybe some 12 year old fanboys would be happy with Alonso playing there.

If he's willing to come here for a wage representative of his status in a Championship team, with the promise of a wage rise should we get promoted, I don't think the transfer fee would be a problem.

quick google check shows he signed a 4 year deal at villa when they signed him from blackburn which runs out summer 2013

so unless he extended (doesn't seem likely) then he is indeed out of contract

He's good. Not as good as some make out, mind but certainly the best LB currently at the club. I'd probably argue he's on a par with Mears defensively.. Just stronger in the tackle (not always a good thing - See Robbo) and he's better at retaining the ball, but that's not massively important.

They do.. But they don't have to be creative. The reason it's not important to me, is because all they have to do is offer the width to make the pitch wider. Get it and pass it short. He's fine at that. Mears tries to do a bit more than what he needs.

But it's true.. Apart from maybe the midfielder sitting in front of the back 4, full-backs see more ball than anyone.

I think the stat is, that full backs see more of the ball and in more space than anyone else in the side. Which is why the likes of Ashley Cole who can attack and defend and is quick have been so valuable.
