Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
(Before I go on, well done to the Palace fans rising above the petty bickering. Do stick around.)
In the BN, Marc Iles says that Craig Dawson's £3million valuation "could take up a large portion of the cash Freedman has to spend this month" (you reckon?!). "Other signings - including the in-doubt loan deal for Aston Villa’s Stephen Warnock - could hinge on the result of talks for the centre-half."
And speaking of centre-halves,

And speaking of centre-halves,
Zat Knight said rather than wrote:Competition is always good. Maybe the manager hasn't had enough players in some positions. Sam (Ricketts) isn't a centre-half and he's been playing there. If he had options then it might be more of a test. Maybe sometimes we know we'll be playing next week because there are no other centre-halves. And that's not just my position, but maybe others as well.

In which case you don't really break even, no? You're actually losing £5mil a year, yes?
Fail and we sell a player or two to re-coup the losses. Thankfully, these are nearly always academy starlets who are worth a few bob. The balance sheet restored and we attempt another cycle. This year end will culminate in a windfall from Promotion, the sale of Wilf or possibly both.
We (as it stands) are in a position to resist bids, sign a couple of players and see where that takes us. I am not foolish enough to naively believe that we won't sell anyone this window (and it may well be a player that would be a real kick in the bollocks) but that's life when you are not a top side in the top league. I have no concerns about the clubs who spend wildly as they'll more than likely come croppers like we did in the past.
Whether or not some of the posts here were just reacting to us Palace fans on this board - it is a little disingenuous to lazily label Palace a shit-hole who'll attract no players of quality this window. The point is we're a club that has always been about developing players rather than buying them (our most expensive signings have almost always been gash) and there has been a palpable change around the club this last year or so. Some brighter times ahead for sure (although I realise that none of you probably give a shit)

Good luck with the promotion push and if Zaha wants to go then get as much as you can for him.

Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
They're certainly trying - one report yesterday had them asking any buying club for his immediate return on loan, accompanied by "two or three" fellow loanees from the same club. Not even sure that's legal...PC1978 wrote:Good luck with the promotion push and if Zaha wants to go then get as much as you can for him.
Good luck to Palace, there are dozens of worse clubs around than them, and the fans I've met are uniformly sensible types.

Can't see why it wouldn't be legal, after all we are still awaiting Owen's mystery loan star from Chelsea as part of the Cahill fee!Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:They're certainly trying - one report yesterday had them asking any buying club for his immediate return on loan, accompanied by "two or three" fellow loanees from the same club. Bloody hell, where did Craig Dawson come from?
I'm getting very confused now.

I'm not sure, but I'd be surprised if you're allowed to borrow four players from the same parent club (Zaha plus three).PC1978 wrote:Can't see why it wouldn't be legal, after all we are still awaiting Owen's mystery loan star from Chelsea as part of the Cahill fee!Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:They're certainly trying - one report yesterday had them asking any buying club for his immediate return on loan, accompanied by "two or three" fellow loanees from the same club. In case you're serious (or anyone else wonders): Craig Dawson is the West Brom centre-back we're linked with. 22 years old, Rochdale-born, signed for Dale from Radcliffe Boro and has since represented Team GB at thOlympics, scoring in a penalty shootout, and England U21 (scoring five in 10 – he was the top scorer in England's Euro 2013 qualification group, all from open play, although he scored a vital penalty in England's play-off victory over Serbia).Lord Kangana wrote:Bloody hell, where did Craig Dawson come from? Interesting.
Anyone know if he's any good? Because we've spent quite a lot on centre halves in the last few years, and not many have come up to scratch...

I would be careful with thoughts of windfalls from promotion. The chances are, any extra money gained through promotion will end up in player and agent pockets. Your wage bill will increase significantly and once the initial excitement is over, the pressure (self created) will be to spend will become difficult to resist.SE25_1905 wrote: At risk of leading this away from the 'banter' that seems to be developing - the club is losing approx £4m per year (with the owners collectively picking up the slack). Many seasons ago we were held up as a model for smaller clubs to follow in achieving in the Premiership. That went out of the window and Megson and Coyle pissed away millions in wages and fees. Why? Expectation changed from the earlier days. Moderate success meant we had to stay, we became desperate to do so and we spent spent spent.
You'll spend a bit on going up. If you stay you'll start to spend a lot more. Before you know it you 'have to' stay up or end up financially far worse than when you went up. It may not happen, but it seems to happen to most...

If it did exist surely Norwich wouldn't be lining up a £3m bid. I know Delia is a bit of a bint but she's not that daft!
