At risk of leading this away from the 'banter' that seems to be developing - the club is losing approx £4m per year (with the owners collectively picking up the slack). So far we are in their debt to about £12m. They've mentioned this on the BBS forum and have said that we operate in 2-3 year cycles. This current cycle is the final year. The aim is promotion. We do that then they've seen the return on their investment and they'll look to try and establish the club in the Prem.

Fail and we sell a player or two to re-coup the losses. Thankfully, these are nearly always academy starlets who are worth a few bob. The balance sheet restored and we attempt another cycle. This year end will culminate in a windfall from Promotion, the sale of Wilf or possibly both.

I would be careful with thoughts of windfalls from promotion. The chances are, any extra money gained through promotion will end up in player and agent pockets. Your wage bill will increase significantly and once the initial excitement is over, the pressure (self created) will be to spend will become difficult to resist.

Many seasons ago we were held up as a model for smaller clubs to follow in achieving in the Premiership. That went out of the window and Megson and Coyle pissed away millions in wages and fees. Why? Expectation changed from the earlier days. Moderate success meant we had to stay, we became desperate to do so and we spent spent spent.

You'll spend a bit on going up. If you stay you'll start to spend a lot more. Before you know it you 'have to' stay up or end up financially far worse than when you went up. It may not happen, but it seems to happen to most...

It is a fair point and I know promotion certainly comes with increased costs but I think most of us are already prepared that we'll not be looking to make lots of signings if and when we go up. We are acutely aware that will make our job of surviving all the tougher but the boards first priority is to start to re-build the stadium stand by stand with the PL bounty making up a good chunk of the cost.

I'm fairly sure that survival would be considered a remarkable achievement in that context but IH nearly did it with Blackpool with a tighter wage budget than we'd have and I'm sure that was part of the logic in his appointment.

Whilst the academy can produce us players that can fetch between £8m and £15m every now and again then it takes the immediate financial pressure off a little.

I posted about him a few pages ago that some Rochdale fans thought he was great. One even believed he will get a full England cap!

You have to say, five goals in 10 U21 caps ain't bad... but there's a major gulf between U21 and full internationals, as 33-cap Fabrice Muamba discovered.

I'd expect so, even if it was Iles (rather than a Fleet Streeter) who seemed to think that sum wasn't out of the question.

Some more background. League Two Player of the Year in 2010, scoring 10 as as Dale were promoted, he was signed by West Brom and loaned back to Dale, his 11 (!) goals helping them finish 9th in League One. In February 2012 Roy Hodgson gave him a contract until summer 2015 with "the option for a further 12 months in the club’s favour". This was after a run of games in the first team, but he only played twice after January, when the Baggies had an injury crisis. Still, he impressed one blogger very much in their 4-0 battering at City...

He's also been linked with Swansea (them again!) and Everton, but in all impartiality he'd do better to come here on loan - providing he gets in the team (which you have to imagine he will, given our defensive ineptitude).
