I've no issue with people who buy them. IF they can park the damn things.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Here the vast majority of people drive 4x4s. I must admit that we bought one too. Drive on the roads here for an hour or so and I guarantee you'd make the same decision. We went for a small one, but some of them here are ridiculous. 7 seats for 3 people and all that. Some of them are literally bigger than parking spaces. School drop off times are a nightmare. Jumeirah Jane has little Tarquin to drop off in her 7 seater tank between nail and hair appointments. Obviously this is a tricky thing and can only be achieved by mounting the pavement or stopping in the middle of the road for 5 minutes.BWFC_Insane wrote:Yep. Thats really annoying. Usually 4 by 4 drivers. Who think that cos they're in a big feck off fuel guzzling monstrosity, that they can do whatever the hell they like.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Or, you see a space then realise some tw*t is parked across 2 spaces..
Absolute cvnts IMO.
If you have a big car, learn to park the fecking thing.
I might start a Dubai Daily Rant thread
I guess I do get irritated with people who buy the big fecking things then use them just to do the daily school run with their two kids, double parking, blocking the road etc.

Here it is about self preservation and it is handy as sometimes you have to go off-road because they haven't finished a road or summat. It does help that petrol is cheap here, though we still opted for a fuel efficient one.

A short while ago, wife noticed a wet patch on the wallpaper high up on the landing. Son-in-law had a crawl up in the attic and discovered a hole beside the chimney. My reckoning was that the wind and rain had blown away the chimney lead flashing (you can actually see a piece of it on the roof). Girl next door says her wallpaper is the same. Got on to our building insurance who sent along a surveyor. "Wear and tear, whole chimney needs re-pointing and we haven't had any winds over sixty miles per hour. No claim."
I've been paying building insurance for twenty seven years and never claimed a penny off them. Worse thing is, it isn't a massive job in itself, but health and safety require scaffolding for access and that will bang it up out of sight. Welcome 2013.

There were strong winds in August of last year.TANGODANCER wrote:A short while ago, wife noticed a wet patch on the wallpaper high up on the landing. We had storm damage to our roof last year. The quotes ranged from £900 to £4500. One firm was able to quote a significantly cheaper price because they were able to use a mobile lift rather than scaffolding. (Either that or the rest were a bunch of crooks.)

Unfortunately, won't carry any weight with the insurers LGM. I got a quote today also from a reputable source ( an established company owner who, luckily, happens to be a friend of the girl next door )and the guy says rather than re-pointing the chimney and renewing the flashing, " Get rid of the lot. Who uses chimneys these days?" I agreed and think I'll go that way. Will also need two TV ariels replacing and re-siting. Not exactly overjoyed, but it could have been a whole lot worse.Little Green Man wrote:There were strong winds in August of last year.http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/loc ... reightmet/TANGODANCER wrote:A short while ago, wife noticed a wet patch on the wallpaper high up on the landing. Well, you see, there is this chap called Crazy Horse who is always moving my posts from one thread to another. This is either to make me look like a plonker or because he was trying to change his avatar and hit the wrong button. You can never quite be sure.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:And this has made you angry?Montreal Wanderer wrote:The National Hockey League lock-out may be over and a new collective agreement is to be voted on. Or possibly I put it in the wrong thread...

What about the contents of the loft that got damaged TD? If I recall you mentioned a large amount of Vinyl which you had been storing now all ruined and mouldy, a couple of 18th century prints and your first edition Great Expectations you'd been storing up there? Then there's the William Morris wallpaper your neighbour had decorated her walls with.

Contents insured with another company GtE. They'll claim the same, roof wear and tear, and anyway, somebody climbed in there and knicked the lot.Gary the Enfield wrote: What about the contents of the loft that got damaged TD? The same thing happened at the higher educational establishment where I work a few years ago. They managed to make up the numbers through voluntary redundancies which were mainly taken up by people looking to take early retirement or those who travelled long distances to get to work and found other jobs to walk straight into closer to home before leaving their posts. All in all, it worked out quite well for those that took the option.bwfcdan94 wrote:old article but just shows what a disgrace that institution is.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
Went in Cafe Nero in town for a quick coffee before an appointment and handed a brand new £10 note across that I had just that minute withdrawn from a cash till. I got change for £5.
I pointed this out immediately, still holding my hand out, and was very near shouted at by the 'barista' who got a £5 note out of the till and said 'This is what you gave me!' staring at me in an aggressive manner.
'No, it isn't,' I replied politely, standing my ground. I knew very well I had given him a tenner.
His manager, the smarmy condescending git, then said there would have to be a full till check so I said 'Stand down and crack on then.'.
With very bad grace he took the cash drawer and a till roll off to a back room and five minutes later glided past me and deposited a scrumpled up £5 note in front of me. No word of apology from him.
That's Cafe Nero off my list now as well as Starbucks!

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

But before you cross it off finally, go back in one more time, order extra large of the most expensive stuff and times four if it's busy and they haven't a clue if you've come in with a party or not, then as they serve it up before paying, say "nope, think I've changed my mind" and walk out.clapton is god wrote:Went in Cafe Nero in town for a quick coffee before an appointment and handed a brand new £10 note across that I had just that minute withdrawn from a cash till. should not being going to coffee shops anyway you need to keep your northerness about you. I personally hate the places and avoid them at all costs

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I don't generally frequent coffee shops - for two reasons:
1. I am intimidated when they ask me what kind of coffee I want - cos I don't understand coffee-talk!
2. It's bloody expensive - and (as Bobo rightly points out) - a flask is the way forward...
however - I went into Tescos to use their free wifi in the cafe - and that is run by Costa... so I braved the counter
I asked for an americano - and fortunately there were no follow-up questions - EXCEPT - what size would you like, sir?
a mild look of panic flashed across my eyes - as I didn't know the categories on offer..
she informed me it was large, small or medium
I thought medium was the safest bet - and she delivered a BUCKET of coffee!!! in a thick-walled giant cup - that my granny (were she alive) would have no chance of lifting! I shudder to think how big LARGE is....
