I'm not a big fan of cathedrals - they leave me cold on the whole - especially the old ones. I like Coventry a lot - and the Catholic one in Liverpool... the monolithic, gothic, mighty stone power-house edifices just leave me feeling a bit empty and alienated... not for me.

however - I was on the way home from Middlesbrough having driven my boys back to uni - and stayed overnight in York (because it is nicer than the industrial park motel in Stockton!) - and so decided to pop into the Minster to give it another chance...

fortunately I got there before they had set up the ropes and the admission desk - so I got in free - and it was relatively deserted - so not lots of annoying people gawping in the aisle!

it's a bit of an oppresive building, I think - and designed to be so! I agree about the HDR - I was just experimenting - they are quite overblown!!

Was looking forward to those natural ones but can't see the pics? . I love cathedrals and get good vibes. May be the histrorical aspects have something to do with it.

maybe - the historical aspect that comes through the stones to me is the massive tyrannical power that they represent - in opposition (to my mind) to almost everything Jesus seems to stand for in the gospels...

Not stating anything you don't well know, but temples to God are no new thing (going right back to the temple of Solomon etc, and beyond in may religions). The original concept was purely a place of worship, a monument, long before Jesus arrived. (He did say it isn't necessary to be seen to pray,) But the tyrannical aspects were not so much the buildings as the people who put themselves in power and used the name of God to do it. Churches and cathedarals, unlike castles and mansions, were purely for worship in a time when religion had massive power. It doesn't have that any more, hence the maintainence of them is gradually outweighing their usefullness as shown by the number of empty buildings, at least in the Christian world. Then again, behind Jesus is God.

The Minster, whilst a product of a bygone age, has many attractions, the fantastic architecture and the skills involved in its design and building not the least, but for me, personally it's still primarily a house of God and that's the main emotion inside it.

hmmmm... and if you read 1Kings and 2Kings - you'll find that God was quite happy with his tent and didn't really want a temple... it was Solomon who wanted to build that (after he had sorted his own palace out!) - with a quite obvious and power-hungry agenda to cement Kingship and the Divine right of monarchs... in fact - if you read 1Samuel and 2Samuel before you even get to Kings - God didn't think it was a good idea for them to have a king either! when they insisted - he said - ok - be it on your own heads....

FWIW I could not see your shiny ball last week - just got the word image. Plus BBC would only give me its pages in text, which was a nightmare. I was using Firefox. I finally got BBC (and your ball) back by chucking my cookies.
