Magnificent set of photographs from Englands highest ground and in a temperature inversion yesterday. Wish I had taken these!

I guess you'd have to get going early in the morning! The way the clouds seem like waterfalls is rather amazing.clapton is god wrote:Magnificent set of photographs from Englands highest ground and in a temperature inversion yesterday. Wish I had taken these!

Re: the Photo thread
I'm learning a bit more about GIMP. I am also finding out how much information is still available from rather decrepit old 35mm transparencies. Still tatty? Yes; but there's a world of difference.

You're learning Dujon - good job! I know nothing about GIMP so can't offer anything but enjoy the project.

Re: the Photo thread
I wasn't after praise, Clappers, but thank you anyway.
My main reason for bunging up those two was to show those who were considering GIMP as an option - after all it's free - what the programme can do, even in the hands of a novice.

GIMP is a very serious bit of graphics processing software indeed - and a jewel in the crown of Open Source software...

What's a 'temperature inversion' though?

Re: the Photo thread
A temperature inversion is where warm air lies on top of cold - which is not usual. It's a gradual effect, not a warm front. It causes cloud to form at low altitudes in cold dense air, so that mountains/high ground are above the cloud tops.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:That's awesome.clapton is god wrote:Magnificent set of photographs from Englands highest ground and in a temperature inversion yesterday. So how do you spot these events? I'd love to see that for myself one day, too.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:A temperature inversion is where warm air lies on top of cold - which is not usual. Re: the Photo thread
It's fairly easy to see if you happen to be on high ground when one is occuring as the cloud layer is below you. They more often than not occur early in the morning rather than later in the day. I don't know where you can find out if one will occur - maybe some specialist weather forecasting can give you that information, but I don't personally know of any. With me it's just a case of luck that a temperature inversion is happening and giving ideal conditions for photography.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:So how do you spot these events? We had a bit of a discussion around this on page 1 of this thread (photo of Rockies I took) - that was one where pure luck dictated I was there in a temperature inversion.

Re: the Photo thread
You might love to see one, Crayons, but it might depend on perspective. I drove in one all the way from Jasper to the Columbia Ice fields in 2006 which tended to spoil the view.
Scenic view of Mount Kitchener.

We did emerge at last above the clouds at the ice fields.

I know it's not a great landscape or the best resolution but still not a bad photo!

I think, just from its attitude, it must be a great white...

Yes. We went to see them while I was in South Africa last year, my girlfriend loves them and got in the cage. I said bollocks to that and watched from a distance...
