this whole "you haven't got flu unless you are basically dead cos when i had it it was really bad" idea is a bit of a common myth. Flu is not THAT common - but as with many conditions it affects different people in different ways depending on a whole gamut of factors...

True. I got the flu off my nephew round about this time last year. He had flushed cheeks and was off it for two or three days. I was laid up in bed for a week, sweating so much I could have wrung my sheets out.thebish wrote:this whole "you haven't got flu unless you are basically dead cos when i had it it was really bad" idea is a bit of a common myth. Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

(anyway - it's me saying it is more complex than you suggest - the opposite of black and white!)

Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
Not angry, just slightly annoyed at people who set internet quiz questions they don't know the answers to. To pass a bit of time I tried a Pride and Prejudice quiz.
Q. What is the name of Darcy's estate in Pride and Prejudice. My answer: Pemberley. Wrong, it's Pemberly (Really, Jane Austen didn’t think so. A literature forum and they can't even spell?)
Q. What is Wickham's profession. My answer Soldier. Wrong he's an officer. Officer isn't a profession, it's a rank in the army or navy. (There was no airforce then) He was a soldier.
Q. Who did Lady Catherine de Bourgh want Darcy to marry? . My answer, Anne de Bourgh. Wrong, it was her daughter (who just happens to be Anne de Bourgh)
Q. What was the chief interest of Lydia and Catherine Bennet. My answer Flirting. Wrong, answer Officers. Really, what did they want to do with them then, collect badge numbers ?.
Q. What is Mrs Bennet's first name? ( There's absolutely no mention of that in the book, believe me) Guess from a list of six. Wrong. And so on, till I just gave up....
Then I found it was an American site, so....

Re Question 5 you should have gone with Fanny and got one right!
P&P2 is a tv documentary on the miniseries.Given Name: Unknown, however P&P2 gave her the first name of Fanny, which is now used quite frequently in the fandom. There is also an argument that her first name could be Jane as Jane Austen frequently named eldest daughters after their mothers.

Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
Where in the book is Fanny mentioned Monty? Names from film/TV adaptations are not in the book at all. I have both the BBC mini-series (all five hours of it) and the Later Keira Knightley version (plus the unabridged book). Film-makers giving characters names have nothing to do with the book at all.

I know - I was just pulling your leg. Indeed the quote says her name is unknown.TANGODANCER wrote:Where in the book is Fanny mentioned Monty? Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
I was a member of a major Austen fansite that has good factual stuff and decent links to everything in Georgian England, but it all became just one big mulberry bush. Supposedly a classical literature site, where one poster replied u r rite to someone's answer to a question. Reminded me of the old Flashman quote: "Americans talking about honour, they can't even spell the xxxxxxx thing".Montreal Wanderer wrote:I know - I was just pulling your leg. Interesting. I think of fanny whenever Keira Knightley comes to mind as well.TANGODANCER wrote:Where in the book is Fanny mentioned Monty? Names from film/TV adaptations are not in the book at all. Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
I've read most of Jane Austen's stuff but it was the Pride and Prejudice section I visited. Admin are all library-style, buttock-clenching aunties who don't allow comparison of adaptations and close conversations where folk might actually have different opinions. No fun at all. I left.... quietly of course.. I don't think I'll be missedthebish wrote:TANGODANCER wrote:I was a member of a major Austen fansite that has good factual stuff and decent links to everything in Georgian England, but it all became just one big mulberry bush. They probably do, but kept in a Vatican-style archive entered through a sanitised airlock with a dragon on the door.I'm guessing they didn't have a section for "Pride and prejudice and Zombies" then??[/
