Ooooooh !!Montreal Wanderer wrote:I imagine he is suggesting that it will be hard for you to get interviews for the better level jobs if you continue to write so poorly. If you used spellcheck you would find words like 'governmant' underlined in red. You could then check to see how the word should be spelled (or spelt). Of course it would not help with 'life of doll', since doll is a word so you should have someone proofread for you. No one is going to interview someone for a job which requires a level of literacy if they write:
In this sentence:your saying that are economy has nought affect on my chances of getting a job
1. Is there a difference between 'your' and 'you're' (ditto there, their, and they're)?
2. What is the difference between 'are economy' and 'our economy'?
3. Nought is a word and a good one, as is naught but are either the word you want here?
After this you should start using capitalization and punctuation.
It is possible you are capable of writing reasonable English with correct orthography, but we have seen little evidence of this. You tend to write gibberish here which leads to the assumption you cannot write better. This is unfortunate as the assumptions we make may be unjust, but personnel managers will make similar assumptions if you write in your applications in the style that you use here.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Sometimes one has to be cruel to be kind, thebish, as I'm sure you are well aware given your calling.
To Danny Boy: I'm afraid that I often need a second and third reading of your posts and, even then, I'm not always sure as to what you're on about. I am also sure that you're a decent sort of bloke so don't take my comments as you might those of a thug bailing you up in a dark alley on a miserable winter's night.
Verbal and written communications are important - and always have been - from which it follows that the lack of ability to spell, punctuate and generally make oneself understood can be a rather large hurdle to overcome when popping out of the cocoon of school a fellow finds himself in the real world. It's even more important than a lad who yearns to be a carpenter but doesn't know the meaning of 'chisel'. In other words, my cyberfriend, my advice is that you, at the very least, take the trouble to enrol in some sort of basic English Language course. I suspect, sir, that you might surprise yourself.

So basically the norm on here is very much to write in a formal way, without any text speak/ spelling mistakes. If that is the case I will look to do so in future.

It isn't formally Dan. It is readable and intelligible. General rule of thumb is thus: If you can't be arsed writing it properly, with no text speak and punctuation, then chances are we can't be arsed reading it. Nobody asks for perfection, just so it can be easily understood first time of reading.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
Since the team played well, I'll have a moan about the club today.
What the blitherin crin are they doing with regards to match tickets? It was bad enough that I couldn't order my usual seat on line. Bought them in person and was told "We're not opening the corners". They were open. Then, I couldn't believe that as I walked past the clubshop 10 minutes before kick off there was a queue stretching across the forecourt. Folk were still coming in 25 minutes after kick off!
Decided to get a half time pie and the queue seemed to take ages. Get to the front. There's a short lass there who couldn't reach the pies & burgers on the top shelf so had to keep interuppting the other server to get them down for her! That was bad enough but she was then too weak to unscrew the tops off the soft drinks. After waiting an age - my bloody pie was cold!

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
Cold pie? Luxury. The kiosk in the upper concourse of the west stand (north stand end) hadn't a single item of 'hot' food left just after the half time whistle. A bag of ready salted with a Bovril just doesn't cut it! Trust me, I've tried it, today.Harry Genshaw wrote: Decided to get a half time pie and the queue seemed to take ages. Get to the front. Perfect, Dan, but - as our desert friend pointed out - 'formal' isn't required, just the need for the reader of your writing/speaking to understand your point. On fora such as this one no one is going to worry about spelling all that much, nor grammar for that matter, if the meaning is still intact. In the big wide world of jobs though it takes on significantly more importance. Anyway, good luck. I shall cease my pontificating and retire from the discussion.bwfcdan94 wrote:So basically the norm on here is very much to write in a formal way, without any text speak/ spelling mistakes. Re: Today I'm angry about.....
In Dan's case this really isn't the case, though. Most of what Dan writes is perfectly understandable. He is jumped on disproportionately.Dujon wrote:Perfect, Dan, but - as our desert friend pointed out - 'formal' isn't required, just the need for the reader of your writing/speaking to understand your point. One thing the Met Office have been getting right, to an alarming degree, of late has been their short term forecasting. Almost to the street, by the hour. They forecasted the heavy snow and the thaw.
Maybe you were busy shovelling snow.

Personally I think picking on grammar/spelling on a forum is lame. (unless, of course, it is to highlight the beam in the eye of someone who is busy pointing out someone else's mote... which is where I get my jollies.)
Anyway - I stick by my assertion (which I see you don't dispute) that most of what Dan writes is perfectly understandable, and so passes Dujon's test.
