Yep, I don't think we disagree. (on this anyway).thebish wrote:I was kinda expecting a couple more sales - perhaps to enable us to buy - I think all this talk of weeding out players that don't want to be here (that Dougie has hinted at a few times in different ways) has reasonably led to the expectation that a couple of older, higher earning players might be shifted on for a fee to free up room to buy someone..Lost Leopard Spot wrote: A bit more substance than I've been given. More sales and more buys at the very least!
but - couple of days to go yet...
also - you can't sell someone if nobody wants him!
That's not a leopard!

You mean he's still in charge? I thought he left in October.thebish wrote:BL3 wrote:
Nothing to do with the manager then?
oh yes - you're right - quite a bit to do with the manager - the one that bought them and managed us into the Championship... now - what was his name... errr... did it start with a C? it's on the tip of my tongue...
Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
Imagine Warnock has traded in his current high wages at Villa for lower wages and the longer deal, otherwise he would never have moved. Crazy stuff from Leeds I reckon, although he looked good he still gave me the impression he'd not be able to move in about 2 years.
Apart from Andrews we can at least shed the other oldies before the high parachute payments run out at the end of next year.

yep - that would be the October AFTER he relegated us to the Championship... that's how time works, y'see!
anyway - I'm not sure I buy all this "player X is better than player Y" bollox - yes in some extreme cases it might be obviously and objectively true - but in the pond we are fishing in it is never that clear cut. As it turns out - I don't really give much of a tit over an argument about one player being better than another - I am much more interested in what difference any particular player might make when part of the team... it's a team game - it's very different from the Wimbledon men's singles final..
if Dougie brings in a few players who some might argue are "worse" (by some kind of mystical in-their-own-head subjective judgement) than one we let go - then I don't really give much of a stuff as long as that new player plays the part he has been bought to play - and thus improves the team.
I think I'm still of a mind to give Dougie enough slack to show me that this is what he is actually doing...
I think that's reasonable - don't you?
Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
I was thinking something very similar.
Hope that doesn't cause you too much discomfort.

We were 16th when the previous manager left and 18 games later... we're still 16th.

Maybe the players signed/re-signed are shit. Maybe Freedman is shit. The players have proved shit over 2 years, Dougie has had a few months. Give Dougie a bit longer seeing as so far he hasn't been a disaster.

Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
BL3, what would you do, specifically if making the decisions at BWFC?
You are quick to point out problems or even potential problems but you're not exactly saying what you want to happen. Do you want Dougie sacked? Yay or may? And if you do, replaced with who?
And if not who should we sign in your view?

5 points from the last six games.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Give Dougie a bit longer seeing as so far he hasn't been a disaster.
Two wins in the last nine games.
Season effectively over in January.
Yep, it's all going swimmingly.

indeed there were - you are right! but what was it that convinced you he was in any way on track for the play-off places?
(he already did the rebuilding he thought was necessary - he'd spend his wad)
yes - we are still 16th - but you seem to be making some kind of assumption (based on I know not what) that just because we were 16th when Coyle left - we'd be 16th or higher had he stayed on... many read the runes differently than you did and could see us being in the relegation zone had he stayed on... of course - all conjecture, we'll never know - but no more conjecture than your assumption that Dougie has us in the same position (or worse) that Coyle would have had us in.
anyway - do you not think it is reasonable to give Dougie the space to show us what he can do with some tuppence ha'penny signings and some elbow grease? we tried the splash-the-cash approach - it wasn't working!

I said not a disaster. Anyway, the writing was on the wall for our season in September. Cheer up, it probably wont kill you...BL3 wrote:5 points from the last six games.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Give Dougie a bit longer seeing as so far he hasn't been a disaster.

Why? Did something different happen in your alternative parallel universe?BL3 wrote:Was it fúck.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Anyway, the writing was on the wall for our season in September
Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
We were four points off the play-offs at the end of September. Six points off an automatic promotion spot. That was in the actual universe.
Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
aye - but it still doesn't get us any further unless you are suggesting that under Coyle we would be 4 points off the play offs NOW had he stayed on...BL3 wrote:We were four points off the play-offs at the end of September. is that what you are saying? if not - then what ARE you saying? where do you think we'd be now if Coyle had stayed on??
Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
I wager Eddie at least is breathing a tad easier of late. A transfer window is about to close and his wallet hasn't hemorrhaged any more of his pension.
Spending millions of pounds on players that had showed some qualtiy, only to watch them lose condition and underperform must have weighed heavy on his chest.

Did you see this question fat kit man? What would you do?
Also, you always seem to indicate that you don't feel your brother-in-law was given enough time this season. I'd say he could have easily gone in October 2011. What did you make of last season? What do you put our relegation down to?! Do you hold Owen accountable for it at all?
The Sherpa Van Trophy! We've won it one time!

Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
So, the following results...BL3 wrote:We were four points off the play-offs at the end of September. Six points off an automatic promotion spot. That was in the actual universe.
Burnley lost 2-0
Crawley lost 2-1
Hull lost 3-1
Birmingham lost 2-1
Crystal palace lost 1-0
Chuck in a draw and 3 not overly convincing wins.
So out of that what honestly made you think we were going to have a good season?
Re: Worthy's better class of transfer thread
I doubt we'd have been 13 points adrift of the play-offs. I suspect that Gartside underestimated the Championship and thought that we should have been doing much better than we were at the time. However when you look at some of the teams that beat us back then, Hull, Millwall, Palace and even Burnley, they've all proved to be better than was first thought. We even beat Watford in September, when apparently 'the writing was on the wall' and Watford can go second if they beat Bristol City tonight...thebish wrote:aye - but it still doesn't get us any further unless you are suggesting that under Coyle we would be 4 points off the play offs NOW had he stayed on...BL3 wrote:We were four points off the play-offs at the end of September.
