I read somewhere, thebish, that the Wallabies and Kiwis are soon to visit the UK. Now, where do you live again?

By the way, Patagonia's a nice country (I'm told) although not as warm as that Caribbean country The West Indies.

HS2

Appalling waste of money, by 2032 the march of technology will have moved so far on and the way business works will mean the need for this type of travelling and needing such links will be redundant. The cost of building such a monstrosity (that by the way will be outdated technology by the time of its completion) is criminal, if it was to be completed in 2-5 years time, fine, but it is not and it will heap yet more woe upon the public purse.
No one has given any thought whatsoever to the fact in 19 years time travel anywhere may be dammed near impossible due to the cost for the majority of people and the successful type of business are not renowned for wasting cash ferrying about minions when a Pc or smart phone does the job.

Rant over!

Christ, a Hoboh rant I fully agree with.

And to add it's not like a journey to London from Manchester now is THAT bad.

2 hours. Christ. I don't see the value at all.

Surely that should end with "we got it five years ago"?

I have a friend who was v senior on the Dept. of Transport (VERY senior). When this Govt. came in the then new transport sec., Philip Hammond ... who everyone rates by the way ... set about the task of reviewing ALL existing plans, getting proper costings (it seems that previously costings there were like coaching to Owen Coyle ... all a bit of a faff really).

They were invited to raise savings opportunities, both micro and macro.

Many raised this project (don't forget it was first proposed by the last lot) .... however they were all told that it was the one plan which was sacrosanct, simply not up for discussion.

I recently took the train from Chester to London & was there in under 2 hours. Frankly I couldn't have wanted anything more. I'm not sure what I'd have done with that extra 40 minutes or so.

There was a time when that journey routinely took 40 mins longer though.

Did people say they weren't bothered by that 40 mins being shaved off? (I genuinely have no idea).

I don't know what I think about HS2. Part of me thinks it's all a cover for some Keynesian spending, as investors seem more tolerant of one, large, prestige infrastructure project like this than lots of smaller projects.

I was thinking about how much a ticket might cost and figured that companies would simply instruct many of us to take the now cheaper West Coast Mainline!

The Local Government Association – responsible for around 180,000 miles of road throughout England and Wales – warned in November last year that the UK could face a pothole crisis as a result of spending cuts.

Since the Coalition came to power, spending on the nation’s road network has dropped by nearly £500 million, yet it is estimated that it would cost around £10 billion to bring the UK’s roads up to scratch.
Never ever believe a government commited to "infrastructure projects", they lie there must be some bungs for those involved in pushing HS2 through!

Well, I know we were in that London but, tbh, we didn't form a focus group or anything when we got off. Just that it was a very fast & very easy journey.

Regarding a Keysian project, I understand the basis of the thought but this would be an odd one as ity'll be 5 years before they start cutting sod, I believe and almost 20 before it's got moving. Keynsian spending needs to be sharper and get quicker results. It also benefits if the spending is more certain to be within the nation .... I'm unsure of the spending ratios, but if the rails, the engineering, the rolling stock, the engines etc., etc. are largely going to from abroad then that money woulld rapidly exit our arena and so not "spin" as often as it might. That is an important consideration in any Keysian spending projects,

What I meant was - back in the days when the journey took 2 hours 40 minutes - were people clamouring for the time to be reduced and were they enthusiastic about paying for the improvement?

Many a time I've gone over to Crewe to catch one of a wider range of trains. But that's a 50min drive, if a 20min shorter train time. So this more than cuts off the extra.

I can't say if there was a clamour back then, any more than if there were groups demanding faster broadband 20 years ago. No-one will ever want a slower time, but there is a differenial which makes the bother & costs viable & some where it would not.

That judgement will depend on the individual & may even vary with the need. It certainly makes a city-centre to city-centre journey much much more realistic.

If someone lived in, say Nantwich & could catch a train at Crewe which would have you in Euston in an hour then .... not that I guess you could afford it ... you could actually commute if your job was near to Euston. (vice-versa too, but hey ... like THAT's going to happen). This was the catch being stated this week ... that the improvement will benefit the SE more than the North.

I honestly don't think the saved hour, for casual users, will make much difference. But for regulars it will.

I tend to the "why bother" camp at the projected costs & ime-scales. But that thinking would kybosh all large infracstructure projects. No motor-ways would ever get built if that thinking prevailed. I've often sat in motorway/dual carriageway roadworks, which seem endless, thinking "I'm help up 30min every day and when it's all done I may gain 5min each time, so is it worth it ? Once up & flowing though it seems worth it.

It's healed already man. Do you read nothing. Apparently we're all middle class now.

Which is a bit of a bugger as I thought I'd left them behind as I crawled up the ladder.
