That's an interesting thought that hadn't occurred to me.bobo the clown wrote:

Of course, in that situation, Nantwich (nice example) would benefit because the money earned in London would be spent in the Nantwich.
F*ck, now you mention it, commuting in from Nantwich sounds like a great shout - let's get this thing built!

Well you lot tell me do you all feel in touch with the so called "richer"people of the south of England. From my own opinions the stereotypes continue and to be honest I can sense a real difference between here and Bolton and to I prefer the north west to the south east based on what I have seen.
The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.

Split up with the girlfriend today - 6 months, all of it great, apart from the last 20 minutes. Hit me like a ton of bricks.

Sorry to hear it, Jimbo, but it's part of life and it sounds like you're best off without her. My first wife dumped me after thirty years but, looking back, the last twenty minutes might have been the best part!jimbo wrote:Split up with the girlfriend today - 6 months, all of it great, apart from the last 20 minutes. Cheers guys. The positive thing is it's amicable. Problem is we work togther and have a pretty big group of mutual friends. Just when you want to hide away from it all it's impossible to. The thing that hit me was how sudden it was - everything fine and dandy at weekend, and then over yesterday with very little inbetween.

Oh - and the other positive is it's finished a few days before super league starts and I can also get to the Reebok again!jimbo wrote:Cheers guys. The positive thing is it's amicable. bloke next to me commutes daily from Birmingham, and hes in for 7.30 every morning! costs a few quid but he has a season ticket which brings it down. he lives five minutes from the station and can park his car there for free. gets his head down for a nother hr on the train too. sounds alright too me but im sure id get fed up of that very quickly. i currently have a 'bed to desk' time of under 3mins.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:That's an interesting thought that hadn't occurred to me.bobo the clown wrote:

i like the idea of going home one night to split the week up but my trouble is it often takes as long to get from Mcr Picc to home as it does from Euston to Mcr. it would also cost a bastard fortune.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
My commute to Canary Wharf on the train was an hour 40. That was only achievable by doing the walking parts very quickly, it was the limited stopping train and it wasn't delayed. Also the DLR was working and the escalators at Bank Station were working. The reality was that the train would either be late or not turn up and the escalators were under maintenance permanently. It took 2 hours usually. When it snowed, or the trains screwed up badly it often took 4 hours each way.General Mannerheim wrote:

It is soul destroying and I wouldn't advise anyone to do it. It was nice to live in a country village and all that, but the toll it took on me was quite high after a few years of it.

Been there and done that (not canary wharf but similar distance and frustrations) and entirely agree.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:My commute to Canary Wharf on the train was an hour 40. You think it'll be ok, but it really does suck the life out of you.
Ended up taking a lower paid job to get out of the situation and never looked back, and my rule since has been only to take jobs that are a sensible commute away.
4 hours out of your day every day, given you've got 8 or usually more hours of work on top, is just not worth any amount of money IMO.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I agree, especially when it's broken into changes, walking etc.
But an hour and a half each way during which the bulk is spent seated on a comfortable train with the opportunity to be productive, informed or entertained? That sounds ok.
General - how long is your colleague's total commute? It can't be Birmingham station he gets to in 5 minutes and parks for free, can it? Is it Lichfield or something?

Foolishly I went from a 7 minute walk to work, to 45 minutes to the 2 hours. Fortunately I had some flexibility with working hours, so was able to avoid the busiest times much of the time.BWFC_Insane wrote:

Mummy - I would struggle with even 90 minutes on 1 train. Being a tall lad, I just don't fit the space provided. The seats on the trains I used to get were too low, about 40% too narrow and about 6 inches short in legroom. They also put metal boxes under the seats, so I had nowhere to put my size 13s. For 5.5k a year you'd hope they could provide at least a half reasonable service

Jim, if it's over, it's over. Love remember the good bits.
Now go throw the net out again.

Thanks for reminding me that being under 6 feet tall is occasionally a good thing!Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: Mummy - I would struggle with even 90 minutes on 1 train. What service was it you used?
Most of my experience of longer train journeys has been on Virgin Pendolinos which, I have always found very comfortable.
Presumably these HS2 trains will be quite nice... I've got 20 years to find myself a nice Cheshire pile.

It's not actually something I'm advocating, but it does work for some ... especially if there's opportunity to work from home sometimes, or in a regional office.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I agree, especially when it's broken into changes, walking etc.

It certainly vastly depends upon the non-train time also .... the drive/walk to & from the stations etc. But it DOES offer options. Especially useful in the short medium term, espevcially to 2 income households.
Plus, in my example, Nantwich is bloody lovely.

If you've got enough money to afford a pile in Nantwich then you can commute to that there Landan in your own helicopter.bobo the clown wrote:It's not actually something I'm advocating, but it does work for some ... especially if there's opportunity to work from home sometimes, or in a regional office.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I agree, especially when it's broken into changes, walking etc.
