I hear you. We replaced ours just before we knew we were leaving the UK

Bought a car here, thought the tyres were fine, but then found out they had to be replaced about every 2 years because of the conditions. The car was 2 years old, so had to buy new tyres :(

I feel yer pain fella. Hit a huge pothole on Tuesday night and shredded one of mine. Put the spare on which was a nice surprise to see that (a) I had a tyre rather than one of them kits in there and (b) it was a proper tyre not one of them bicycle wheels. Decided to get a bog standard replacement. I'm sure last time I did that it cost me under £50. This time it were 80 bstrd quid. :(

There's a fair chance you could recover that off the local council...

Not a cat in hell's. You'd have to prove it was there, the quality of the tyre beforehand etc., etc.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Is that true then? I assumed I just had to suck it up and it was my bad luck. It is a huge pothole on a very narrow, yet public, road

So I guess you've never won on that one then?

Seen it tried (and won) on a number of occasions.

As I understand it, you would have to prove that the hole had been reported previously to the council and that they had not taken any action to repair it. You'd need to do an FOI request on that basis to the Highways department. The council apparently cannot be held liable for potholes they know nothing about.

Also hit a pothole and knackered a tyre the other day. Sounds like the roads up north are as bad as the ones down south.

Only tried the once ... I ended up thinking that they would soon accuse me of breaking up their road with my horrid tyre.

Not sure about this. Here we just take a photograph of the pothole and the garage can give a statement on the age and state of the tyre. Councils are responsible whether or not the pothole has been reported. Even if they have not repaired it they are supposed to put a hazard sign in front of it. Of course they give you a hard time but if you pursue it to small claims court you usually win. Do you have small claims court (no lawyers) in the UK?

The small claims court is available as a route to pursue I believe, and the cost of having a summons issue is quite low. However, factor in the cost of the day off to attend court, the petrol and parking costs and you may as well buy a tyre!

i don't think you'd be able to drive on UK roads if there was a hazard sign propped up in front of every pot-hole!
