Re: Summer Holidays
Just wanted summat a bit different to do for a few days, not planning a summer holiday as such.
Inlaws live in Phwheli so can do the Wales thing anytime, but they are dicks. I'd hate to be holed up in some desolate cottage too, and if we're making our own meals at night - might as well stay at home.
Maybe have a look at camping?

Is Butlins still there? I did the season there back in 1986.

Re: Summer Holidays
Hmmm. The cruise ship I have booked on is the Carnival Legend. This may prove a mistake since one of Carnival Corp's ships had an engine catch fire and left people in appalling conditions last week, while earlier in the year another managed to hit Italy in mistake for the Mediterranean killing 32 people. Do these things happen in threes?Montreal Wanderer wrote:I'll be there in March, ST - I gather the snorkeling is pretty good there and the day trip to Tulum well worth it. Re: Summer Holidays
I'm very wary of cruise ships, Monty. On our migratory trip out to this country two people went overboard via the plank whilst stitched into calico. Only yesterday some poor soul was lucky that his conveyance was within helicopter range of the Australian coast when he had a problem which the on-board doctors and/or facilities couldn't handle. Beware!

On a slightly related note, Dujon, what exactly does the Australian Navy do other than rescue 20-something English wankers who have decided to become the first person to row from Australia to Antarctica whilst whistling 'Rule Britannia' backwards?

Tests our dry dock facilities on a regular basis, Prufrock. As Baden Powell said: Be Prepared.

He is 68 and went out in 1959 (this is partially based on Only Connect guesswork on my part). I am surprised the remains were not chucked in the freezer so a proper autopsy could be performed.seanworth wrote:How old are you and the Mrs.?Dujon wrote:I'm very wary of cruise ships, Monty. Re: Summer Holidays
The age is correct, Monty, but not for long. My family migrated in 1955. As to the medical staff and equipment I haven't the faintest idea. They could have been as simple as a doctor's surgery with a couple of beds or reasonably furnished for operations such as appendectomies. I suppose that autopsies might have been possible but the necessarily limited staff could well have precluded such. As to the burials at sea and the legal implications of the day I have no information other than it happened.
Should you be interested in that era of shipping human cargo around the world then these links might be educational - they all relate to the ship in which I travelled and which, Monty, had links to Canada:

For an eleven year old lad it was certainly a summer/winter holiday never to be forgotten.

You want to tell her (July) that it's not a big deal. In fact you need to make it absolutely clear to her that, sometimes, the longer the wait the more intense the pleasure and therefore the better the experience.Annoyed Grunt wrote:July can't come quick enough......

Indeed, shun her - turn hour back on her and ignore her completely. Then, befor eyou know it, she'll be tapping you on the shoulder. The only trouble is the older you get the faster it all seems to go...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:You want to tell her (July) that it's not a big deal. Premature August ??
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

No, but I could agree it could be interesting (though I hope they have updated the plumbing).Bijou Bob wrote:This weekend we've been on the point of booking a week in Transylvania which we really fancy

Re: Summer Holidays
First proper holiday in about 5 years, so quite excited having booked here:

10 days of doing very little, other than snorkelling, reading and stuffing my face with good food. I will be spending the rest of the year eating beans on toast after paying the bill though
