I have a neighbour who works from home and wears a tie everyday. Apparently he doesn't feel professional and ready for work unless he is wearing his tie.
I also work from home but in shorts and a t-shirt.

Nice idea, now let's see what happens.
Really need to redesign Kings Cross, though.

I wear a tie, but can't see how we're still allowed to in this crazy H&S obsessed world, there we are wandering round a deathtrap office with a length of stray cloth swinging around.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
While I don't agree with Bob's theories of race and class, the health and safety issue did remind of something that happened over twenty years ago. The secretary was away and I attempted to send a fax myself. I was wearing a tie and it got caught up in the rollers and slowly pulled me towards the machine. I damned near faxed myself to Toronto but fortunately the motor lacked the necessary power and everything jammed when I was about three inches away. I actually cut the tie off to escape.
I still wear a tie on 'formal' occasions - giving a speech, attending a funeral, etc. It is a sign of respect - but I never go near fax machines.

not so much angry as deeply saddened to the pit of my stomach...
daughter (after a bit of a shock in her mocks for the first units of her A-levels) worked VERY hard...
she got her results today - and they are pretty bad... she's desperately disappointed - and I feel for her...
bummer of a day...

Sorry to hear this though I'm not sure what mocks are. Does this mean she failed her A levels or that she failed a type of trial exam? Either way we hate to see hard work in our children go unrewarded, whether in academics or other aspects of life.thebish wrote:not so much angry as deeply saddened to the pit of my stomach...

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
she did the mocks (practice ones) - and has now failed in the actual ones... A-levels (unlike our day) are now broken down into units that you do over the course of 2 years... she has pretty much failed the first unit in each of her 4 subjects..Montreal Wanderer wrote:Sorry to hear this though I'm not sure what mocks are. i wouldn't feel so bad for her if she had been a lazy arse and not done any work - and if she didn't have two older genius brothers who sailed through it all without ever breaking sweat...

Sorry to hear, bish. Is she in her first year or second year? Also, when I did mine we had the option of retakes in the summer if we wanted. So it might not all be lost.
Hopefully she'll see it as something to bounce back from.

first year - and - yeah, retakes are an option... need to sit back an reflect for a couple of days.. problem with retakes is that they then pile up with the next set of units and exams..mrkint wrote:Sorry to hear, bish. nah man, fair enough - education is an emotive subject and like you say one that can't be solved instantly.thebish wrote:first year - and - yeah, retakes are an option... need to sit back an reflect for a couple of days.. problem with retakes is that they then pile up with the next set of units and exams..mrkint wrote:Sorry to hear, bish. But still, at least the opportunity to make things right is still there. I similarly bombed in my first set of a-level results...annyoed and upset me for a bit. But after a while that just turned into a burning ambition to prove everyone wrong. Just hope it doesn't knock her confidence too much.
What subjects is she studying, out of interest?

I'm curious as to why you see a tie as a sign of respect Monty? I think going to a funeral with dirty shoes or scruffy would be disrespectful, but I'm not sure I understand why a tie automatically signifies respect?Montreal Wanderer wrote:I still wear a tie on 'formal' occasions - giving a speech, attending a funeral, etc. It is a sign of respect - but I never go near fax machines.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
Tough subjects. My older three kids all took those in college and carried on to University. My youngest started in pure and applied science, but bailed out into biology in second year university. From what i understand she has another chance and from what Mr. Kint says she may have motivation. It must be rare to fail all four subjects and there may be other factors at work. As you say, reflect on the matter. Talk things over rationally once she has calmed down a bit. Try to understand why it went wrong and get her to understand it. As parents we can't do anything in these situations, but we can be a rock to fall back on, a friendly shoulder and a source of encouragement for the future.thebish wrote:mrkint wrote:nah man, fair enough - education is an emotive subject and like you say one that can't be solved instantly.thebish wrote:first year - and - yeah, retakes are an option... need to sit back an reflect for a couple of days.. problem with retakes is that they then pile up with the next set of units and exams..mrkint wrote:Sorry to hear, bish. Re: Today I'm angry about.....
It may be a generational thing, Bob, but a jacket and tie does represent dressing up for an occasion. Turning up to represent your company, or going to a funeral, in sneakers and a T-shirt, no matter how clean, does not go over well with those who observe you. It's a bit like the old Stanley Holloway tale "Brown Boots". For me to dress decently requires I wear a suit (or jacket) and tie, although I'd be more comfortable in a polo shirt. Even as a private in the army I had to wear a tie (and the most uncomfortable shirt ever made by man). How we won wars I'll never know. Soldiers still do wear ties when on parade, even if they don't in combat. On parade you dress up and look your best.Bijou Bob wrote:I'm curious as to why you see a tie as a sign of respect Monty? I'm sure in another generation no one will wear ties but they are still considered somewhat smart.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
I think it's about 'making the effort'. That shows a degree of respect, I suppose. So I kind of agree with Monty. I have and always will wear a suit and tie to a funeral unless instructed otherwise by the deceased's immediate family.
