Charlton station – which is on the national rail network out of Charing Cross/Waterloo East/London Bridge, but not the TfL's London Overground network – is less than five minutes' walk from The Valley. A surprisingly hilly five minutes, but I suppose the clue's in the ground's name.

Ah reet, as DSB noted (who, I'm surprised to see, seems to have sponsored the entire Danish train network) there is an actual TfL service called the overground, which i was confusing with you meaning that and not national rail.

But would say, a Zone 1-2 day pass be valid for travel to Charlton (assuming it's within those zones) or would a seperate ticket be needed?

It should still be valid with a 1-2 pass (I've used my oyster card at Twickenham rail station, for instance, which isn't on the tube and is in zone blithering five). Don't quote on it being that way, but I would be extremely surprised if they didn't accept those passes.

Sounds right from experience, seem to remember using my oyster on trains going out of Waterloo. My lack of knowledge of southern geography got me in a mess once. Had a client in Woking, and as it was the first stop I simply assumed it would be near by and I'd be ok with my oyster. The train then set off at high speed and didn't stop for about 25 minutes...Woking is definitely outside of the Zones. Still, not a bad as the time I accidently got a train to Brighton from Clapham Junction.

If you have a Zones 1&2 pass you'll be able to get on a train at Charing Cross (which is on the Northern Line for those coming from Euston); the train will then cross the river and go through Waterloo East, then London Bridge and a few other stations. At some point before Charlton your journey will become technically illegal. You might be able to bunk through at Charlton, and back on again after the game, but don't blame me if you can't...

A friend of mine once got stuck in Tottenham on a Friday night. Can you imagine it a 16 year old lad from Berkshire who had never been anywhere rougher than Reading (which as you and me both know could never be described as rough) wandering around in Tottenham in the pitch black. I don't know the full story but he went to see his older brother who played for Southampton U18s at the time play at the lane without realising that there was engineering works after 9PM therefore meaning he and his brother had to walk all the ways to Seven Sisters underground station (about 3 miles) rather then get a train back from Northumberland Park station (which is opposite the ground. Those of you who live in London and those of you who have been to Tottenham who have walked down that long high road from Seven Sisters to White Heart Lane will know it is not a pleasant experience on a match day but it is ten times more scary when all the local gangs come out to do what gangs do especially when every corner has a group of 10 African or Jamaican youths on every corner with hoodies and balaclavas on and who almost certainly will be armed. How they survived that endless walk up the high road on a Friday night I do not know.

What a shame Bruce you will miss out on all the horrors of London. I hate London as a place myself and although Charlton is by no means the worst place it is not exactly great. Think of us when we are squashed on a train while you can see nothing but grass, hills and sheep, where in Wales you going BTW.

Do go. It's a nice ground now, and weirdly empowering as a fan: before Charlton supporters got active in the 80s, it was nobbut a weed-infested hillside.

I had a bit of bad news today. A long planned excursion to the Milton Keynes branch of in-laws, folk I'm not particularly endeared to, seems to have fallen through. Should that prove to be the case I can see no good reason for not making the trip.

Charlton is the closest fixture to home and I was feeling a little aggrieved at the prospect of missing it.

You can definitely use a travel card/Oyster card to use Charlton station, but if travelcard it needs to be valid for the correct zone.

Dan, I lived in Seven Sisters. The entire area is an absolute shithole and full of proper dodgy characters. Still, unsurprisingly most of the kids hanging around I always found to be all right. It's the ones who aren't hanging around on corners you need to watch out for. Every one I know who had any trouble around there, including myself, was from folk following you from the tube and then jumping you, rather than hanging about waiting.
