Snowbound in North Wales today, so sat and watched Football Focus, followed by F1 Qualifying and thought oh well, get the radio on and listen to BBC MCR's commentary. But no!! WTF? What a sinking feeling to remember that last night's men vs boys game was a prelude for me having a totally miserable afternoon not knowing what to do. :(

Bring on Tuesday evening. Not.

Had a look at this article on bbc yesterday. Seems to be suggesting that lots of racists are still going to grounds in the north west and that Asians avoid the likes of Turf Moor and Deepdale because of fear of racism. Not sure where BBC got this from but just seems like they are trying to stir things up.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-ma ... r-21893570
The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.

Hmm. Perhaps not being a local I shouldn't shove in my oar on this one. But I will.

I think, Dan, that I must have read a different article than you (although it was the link that you provided). One man - just one - stated his opinion that perhaps it's a legacy of the 'old days' when overt racism was in evidence. Perhaps it could be implied from that quotation that all the residents of the area with sub-continental forebears are fearful of some covert racism today. It didn't sound like it to me though. No one else quoted seemed to be concerned about that aspect. Surely if the BBC journalist wanted to 'stir things up' there would have been a strong emphasis on the point?

As to the rest of it it's pretty innocuous stuff, particularly as it's far from being some sort of in-depth study. To me it read more as an article highlighting the efforts of the local clubs and sections of the community which they serve to get involved with football. Mind you, I thought the quotation referring to having mosque visits was a bit vapid and hardly worth its inclusion.

Soul crushing doesn't sound good. Did you do a risk assessment before launching into your health and safety online assessments to determine the level of acceptable crushing your soul might endure?

Asians tend to follow the bigger clubs, DMB's and Liverpool have a sizeable followings for example. I went to Smithills and didn't know a single Bolton fan who was Asian. I don't think race comes into it, if you're a proper supporter then the chances are you'll support your club whoever they are.

This story gets dragged up every few years, boring boring BBC.

I was asked five years ago to complete risk assessments for my team on their day to day jobs - (we input data). I spent days on it. The template was five A4 pages, by the time I'd finished it was fourteen pages. We had very few activities or circumstances that could lead to death or severe injury but hundreds that required mitigation from severe disruption. I managed to squeeze in amongst the usual trips and fall hazards: tea scalds, electrocution, heat stroke, bee stings, insect bites, anaphylactic shock, illegal drug usage, energy drink overdoses, paper cuts, toxoplasmosis, Weil's disease, dyslexia, toothache, bad news about Bolton Wanderers scorelines, Chinese state sponsored cyber warfare, unexpected SAS raids, snowfall, flooding, earthquake, meteor strike, and Armageddon.
I hadn't had so much fun for ages. And then just before the deadline for submission back to SHEQ we got an email round saying the risk assessment was for on-site project work only and it'd been sent to all managers by mistake, sorry. I've still got a printout somewhere, just in case I'm ever asked again, unmistakenly.

Reminds me of a 40 page risk assessment I had to do years ago for one of our client sites. After slogging my way through the ridiculous and inane questions (most of which ignored real risks) I submitted to the Client H&S bore. 6 months later he came back to me and demanded to know why our on site team weren't required to wear safety shoes (we offered them to staff that wanted them). I asked if they were requiring their own staff to wear them (no) and then proceeded to spend 2 and a half years arguing with him. My point being that if his staff didn't need them, then why would mine, given they work in exactly the same office performing the same type of roles. His issue was that I offered the shoes on a voluntary basis and therefore there must be a risk. I came very close to pushing him down the fire escape :whack:

At my induction training for my employer 2 years ago, we had a number of sessions in one day.

First up, was Health and Safety who covered safe lifting techniques etc and then went on to outline a wide variety of hazards in the workplace that we might like to avoid. Any questions, he asked..........

"Could you tell me why you're wearing a potential ligature point round your neck" I asked.

Cue much spluttering.

"Can you confirm that it is indeed counter to policy on infection control"? I followed up with.

Cue more spluttering and a half hearted attempt to justify his wearing of a tie.

Next up was Equality and Diversity training, a key favourite of mine.

After an hour during which I'd pointed out that they were using 6 year old data that had been discredited by the National Audit Office they moved on to Fire Safety. The first slide was entoitled 'Fire Safety' and had a picture of 5 semi naked, oiled up firemen clinging to large poles. On pointing out the incongruety of the past hour with the current slide, a comment from one of my fellow attendees that "Just because you've not got a washboard like that" gave way to an open debate about bullying and harrassment and finished with me asking about how to make a formal grievance.

They let me off day two!

I left Smithills middle school (then named Smithills Moor Grammar School) in summer 1971 and as per Bruce, not a single Asian there.

I was at the Grammar, Clapton. I'd imagine that the move to the comprehensive system led to a more cultural diversity.
